Am I crazy?

I posted last week that I had several job interviews scheduled. Yesterday I was offered one of those positions and I just called and turned it down!!!

Am I crazy???? The company had fantastic benefits and the salary was good, but I was very concerned about the company being around in a year or two from now. I am wondering what you all think.

In conversations that I had with the HR Director, department head and other people who work within the department I learned that there have been several layoffs during the last 2 years. The first floor of the building is half empty!!! It is so empty that they are moving all the executive offices from the second floor to the first and renting out the top floor of the building. They are also closing down two other locations and consolidating all their operations into this one. All of the people in those locations are losing their jobs .

I would have been the first person this company hired in 2 years and only because the person in the position I was filling moved out of state. I had lunch with some of the people I would be working with and I heard not one positive thing about the company yet 2 of them had been there for more than 20 years and the other 15 years.

After discussing with DH I decided that I wasn't going to take the position. I would rather have something more stable. Did I make the right decision? Just curious what you ladies would do.

I don't think you're crazy....the old adage is 'last in, first out'...if you weren't secure now..you'd never be!

Wendy - I don't think you are crazy - I would have done the same thing!! I'm sure your DH agreed!! Good luck with continuing the process!

I think you made the right decision! Sometimes your gut felling will tell you what to do, and if you got a negative impression then it's better to stay away! Better luck in the future!

Wendy...I admire your decision to turn it down. I've taken jobs 'just because' and usually end up in a upsetting environment. I think it was a very solid and good move and I know you'll going to find the perfect place soon!

Thanks ladies! I know I made the right decision for me, but you know how those second thoughts come creeping in. I even went so far yesterday of making a list of the pros and cons. It's hard to turn down a job in these times, because you never know when the opportunity will come again. But as Leelee said I didn't want to take it 'Just because'. My DH is 100% behind me (he would have to listen to me complain if things didn't work out) and he felt too that it would not have been a good place for me to work.

So the job search continues. At least I know that I am still very marketable even with the fact that I have been out of work for more than 8 months. That makes me feel better!!!

Wendy - you are definitely not crazy!! I would have done the same thing. And since you have hubby's support, then don'tt hink twice about it!!

I have left 2 companies in my relatively short 8-year career mainly because they were merging and downsizing was always a threat. Plus, they were in the city and I wanted so badly to get out adn work close to home.
