Am I overreacting? (kinda long)

I ordered my dress back in August.
I was PMSing and bloated that day. When they lady measured me she recommended that I get a size 14, because that was the size that coincided with my measurements. She told me not to be alarmed at the number since this designer does not run true to size. Since she is a 'professional', I listened to her and ordered the size 14.

Fast forward to two weeks ago, I go to pick up my dress and I tried it on, it is SO BIG on me. I didn't even have to zip it up, I could step into it.

I have lost 20 pounds since August and I don't know what to do. With my current measurements I would have to wear a size 8 dress.

I was so upset with the dress and how the salon treated me (they ordered the wrong veil, I had to wait for an hour because they 'lost' my dress) that I left.

When I called to see about alterations, they quoted me around $500

I am REALLY upset and nervous about getting my dress altered.

Has anyone had their dress massively altered? Does it cost this much?
How did the dress look when it was done?

Yes, I definitely DON'T think that losing 20 pounds would make you go from a 14 to an 8.
I think that you should tell them that they were the ones who told you to order a 14 to begin with and you took their 'professional' advice on that and the least they could do is cut you a break if not give you the alterations at no charge for that fact alone. It's not right b/c you are their customer.
I would say if you lost 20 pounds you could go from a 14 to MAYBE a 10-12 so they could charge you maybe 100-150 bucks but NO WHERE near 500... tell them that you will report them for being unfair to BBB and that you want them, as a paying customer, to do the right thing by you and be understanding that their employee told you to order that size dress.
Good luck, I'm sorry you had a bad experience. I do know a lady that does amazing alterations-- so if they are not cooperating (at this point I wouldn't want to give them any more of my money) FM me and I'll give you her info (I've used her three times and she was recommended to me by my Aunt).
She was very reasonable when I used her and she offered to do my wedding gown. She's so sweet!!
