Am I overreacting? (kinda long)

Am I overreacting? (kinda long)

I ordered my dress back in August.
I was PMSing and bloated that day. When they lady measured me she recommended that I get a size 14, because that was the size that coincided with my measurements. She told me not to be alarmed at the number since this designer does not run true to size. Since she is a 'professional', I listened to her and ordered the size 14.

Fast forward to two weeks ago, I go to pick up my dress and I tried it on, it is SO BIG on me. I didn't even have to zip it up, I could step into it.

I have lost 20 pounds since August and I don't know what to do. With my current measurements I would have to wear a size 8 dress.

I was so upset with the dress and how the salon treated me (they ordered the wrong veil, I had to wait for an hour because they 'lost' my dress) that I left.

When I called to see about alterations, they quoted me around $500

I am REALLY upset and nervous about getting my dress altered.

Has anyone had their dress massively altered? Does it cost this much?
How did the dress look when it was done?

Thanks for your advice.

$500?!!!!!! are they insane?! 99% of brides lose weight before their weddings!

I would ask them if they can return it and order you a new one

ETA: I had over 12' inches taken in on the bodice of my dress and my seamstress did an amazing job! let me know if you want her info.

Your salon, IMO, is taking advantage of you.

Unless you're REALLY short, 20 pounds should not drop you that many sizes. I lost 30 pounds and went from an 18 to a 14 in Wedding Dress sizes, and I'm 5'2'. Since they ordered you a dress in the wrong size, they should either A) rush order you a new dress and alter that (if they can), or B) offer to cover some of your alterations.

When I worked for David's Bridal, the rule was that a dress could be brought in up to two sizes. I think you're going to lose some detail once they're done bringing it in.

I'm so sorry you have to deal with this.

I agree with Rachel, you are so not overreacting. Definitely speak with your salon, taking it in that many sizes is going to lose the detail of the dress. I'm sorry you have to deal with that!

Didn't your salon give you an alteration cap? I don't think there is a problem with altering the dress - a lot of girls lose a lot of weight before their wedding but the amount they want to charge you is ridiculous.

I feel like they are totally taking advantage of me. I live in Los Angeles and I just didn't know where to buy a dress.

They will not re-order the dress for me since I agreed to order a 14 (because that's what they told me to do).
They will not discount the alterations at all.

I spent so much money on this dress and now I am scared it will be ruined.

You are definately NOT over reacting! They can't be serious. Haven't they ever heard of an alteration cap? Most salons give you an alteration cap that they can't exceed. Mine, for example is $250. You need to get to the bottom of this. They're charging you for alterations that you probably didn't need in the first place!

Hey Annette--thats crazy!! But I know my place suggested what size to get me but when I signed the paper it said that I agreed to the size they suggested. So thats the legal contract stuff you are probably stuck in. The alterations seem crazy though!! Is it possible to take your dress somewhere else for alterations?? Im hoping to lose 20 pounds too--I hope I dont run into the same problem!! Your dress will look great no matter what--and you better in it for having lost that weight!! Actually when I mentioned it to my seamstress about if I lost alot of weight she said it shouldnt change the detailing because they take equal parts from each seam (not all the extra material from one area) and sew it back together...so its kinda like redoing the dress. At least she said this is what a good seamstress will do. Good Luck!!

Can you believe it? No! Feh.

On to seriousness - Roxy, I would call the BBB on these people. Also, I'd add the name of the shop and the girl who ordered you the wrong size to your original post, because it's nothing but factual.

Also, ask DLeeny about her seamstress because from her post it seems that she has a very good one. I did too, but I don't know how much embellishment your dress has - can you post or FM me a pic?

No I do not think that you are overacting at all! That is a lot of money for alterations. I would take your dress home and bring it to another lady for alterations. Good Luck and Congrats for losing the weight!!! Everything will work out and you will look amazing on your wedding day!

If you don't mind sharing, where did you buy it?
(not that it makes a difference, I am just being nosy)

Re: Am I overreacting? (kinda long)

first try and speak with them about ordering another dress...

did you put alot down already?.. if they say no... possibly have a lawyer read your contract and see if there is a loophole...

Call a seamstress and ask them their opinion on fixing it.. how much and can it be done without it being ruined...

bottom line, Is that you need a dress, one that fits and looks beautiful... your not overreacting... be firm on your points.. you have us all behind you and let us know what happens!!!
and by the way, you go girl for losing wieght!!@

Re: Am I overreacting? (kinda long)

when you ordered it, did you see the size chart? Did you see her matching your measurements to the chart? If you signed something in good faith and were misled, then you may have a case.

Also, I would take it to another seamstress if there is no recourse. It sounds fishy to me and like a scam. They order bigger sizes so they can collect on ateration fees...hmmm..very fishy

Annette,
Can you take it to a different place for alterations? Or get alterations done in NY? I know there are a lot of places people recommend on these boards.

$500 is just ridiculous.

Good luck!

Wow Annette!! Way to go on the weight loss, that is truly unbelievable!! But I wouldn't totally panic. A good seamstress will be able to handle this. Before you start alterations, do a little research, find out the salon's rep for alterations and also if you go ahead and have the alterations done there explain your concerns to the manager before you even get started and tell her you want their best seamstress and that you are very particular and want to do everything possible to avoid problems. Even at the place I got my dress, I pulled some employees to the side and asked about the seamstresses, and every single employee recommended the same two seamstresses, so I knew I'd be okay with either of them. Good luck!

Did they SHOW you the size chart??? If not they pretty much blindly got you to agree to it... 500 is ALOT for alterations.. mine is capped at 170! not to mention i am going to need about an inch hemmed and they were like let us do it instead of ordering hollow to hem cause then it is capped in what you are paying anyway to us, Y pay the extra 100 to order hollow to hem! soooo love fantasia bridals! anyway, I have heard many stories of bridal shops telling the bride to order large sizes than necessary...
