Am I terrible?

Original post by camposal

I feel so bad that i'm even thinking this but I can't help it. Our wedding is going to cost significantly more than we expected and now i'm reconsidering inviting distant family that I haven't ever seen or that I've met once or twice. Here is the worst part, my reason for this is because i know most of them aren't in a good financial situation and probably wont bring a gift at all. Is it terrible to invite other people who I think will be more financially able to bring gifts???? Please be honest.......

Based on reading this, I think it's a bad idea to plan a wedding with 'what am I going to get' from guests at the forefront. I know I, as a lot of ladies here did, planned it with the idea of 'what are going to make guests feel special? what will they love?' No, you aren't horrible! You're human. But perhaps you should consider scaling it down to something you can afford...

thanks for the honesty. I originally didn't want to invite some of this family since i dont know them, but my mom really wants them to come. The problem lies in that they all have adult teen children with boyfriends and my mom wants to invite all of them. That's just a lot of money for me to spend on people i dont even know.

I have somewhat of a similar problem. My family is HUGE! My dad has 11 bros and sisters and my mom has 7. Most of them have pre teen or teens too. Now I didn't not want to invite some of them b/c we aren't really that close, but mom said it would be rude, and since they are taking care of the reception I agreed. Chances are a lot of them won't come b/c the reception is all the way in LI anyway (not all of them have cars). And if your guest are from OOT they might not show anyway. (That maybe mean but its true). Second who's paying for the reception, I mean if you really can't afford them and you are the one paying then I say don't invite, but if you parents are helping pay then they should be allowed a few guests.
