I would have loved a Sun Conure, but we have two cats.
My mom had a Mynah bird in the Philippines that I loved- he talked ALL the time.

Re: Am I the only bird lover?
We have birds, too...3 zebra finches
3 parakeets
and we are trying to find a place that has Australian Lorrikeets (I think I may have speeld that wrong) aka Lorry Birds.
I want an African Grey or a Macaw, but not until we are finished with the house & can set up a nice aviary.

African Grey's are better off in a cage than an aviary...and a smaller cage than a big Macaw Cage.
Greys, because of their shorter tail, lack balance, are very clutzy. So, if the Grey falls, which they do a lot when playing around in their cage, they don't have far to fall...when placed in large cages/ floor to ceiling, they risk cracking open their chest....DH has had a few clients this happened to.
Macaws have Much better balance, their tales are a lot longer, and they don't have problems like Greys in large cages/aviaries.
Our Grey has a nice size cage, not tiny (probably 4 feet by 2.5-3 feet), but not huge... but he's out of the cage from morning until night, doing his own thing.

Re: Am I the only bird lover?
Scary intelligence! They are the smartest birds out there, and the best talkers.
Alex, the famous bird of the this famous professor (I forget her name right now), is now able to read books out loud!
Several years ago they said an African Grey's intelligence was equivolent to a 5 year old child...but now...my god, reading books!
Let me know when you are interested in getting one, I have a wonderful friend who has been breeding Greys for many years, and we got ours from her...he actually hatched from his egg on my birthday.
I also have a great Parrot video, all about their intelligence, etc...it was a PBS documentary or something.,.I can copy it for you if you'd like.

Reading out loud????? That is amazing (a little creepy too) I love animals that show some level of intelligence...it just makes them so much more intriguing.
Supposedly we are closing on the house in the middle of april, then about 3 months of renovations, then I will begin looking for a grey. I want to make sure all of the dust and dirt is completely gone from the house before bringing any of the pets in
If you have the name of the PBS show I can order it...my mom is a member

Kathy, how much does your breeder friend want for a baby grey? A friend of mine has always wanted one. He already has 2 cockatiels and 3 cockatoos.

Yes he is.

He sees everything, dogs, cats, snakes, birds, rodents...etc.
But yes, he does also specialize in exotics.

Where is he located? We use Dr. Monaco in Plainvew, but now that we live in Lindenhurst, its not that convenient for appointments.
