DH works and doesn't get home until late, so we don't do anything with the family. I just make dinner for us.

Ooo, I have an adorable xmas eve story.
We spend xmas eve at Grandma & Grandpa's (I have really young grandparents, they're only in their late 60s now.) I am the oldest of 9 grandchildren, the youngest being about 6 now.
Every year since I was born, Grandma hires someone to come to the house dressed as Santa to sing some songs and give out little gifts.
Last year, G-ma's regular guy backed out at the last minute. He was a newlywed, and his new wife made him travel to CT to spend xmas with her family. G-ma was so so soooo upset. We called every single person in the pennysaver, even called friends of the family to see if they were willing to fill in. Of course, everyone was already booked or busy.
FH (then he was just BF) saw how upset I was, because I know how much this meant to G-ma. Somehow he managed to get his hands on a Santa suit. I ran to the dollar store and got some little gifts (hair clips, matchbox cars, etc.) and wrapped them all up.
My adorable BF left his family at dinnertime on xmas eve, drove 40 minutes, and showed up at G-ma's as SANTA! He gave out the little gifts and even lead the little cousins in Christmas carols. No one knew it was him, not even Grandma! She was SHOCKED when this big guy in the red suit walked in the door. My dad whispered to her that it was FH, and she started bawling. Everyone got their pics taken on Santa's lap, even G-ma, with her mascara running down her face onto her white sweater.
FH could give me anything in the world, but nothing would balance out what he did for me and my family last year. Now that's love. Everytime I retell the story or even THINK about it, I tear up. Man I love that guy.

this is the exact same way in my Italian family .. christmas eve is the day we celebrate, the day is not quite as big a deal. Though it has made life easier for me and DH splitting holidays, thank Goodness
ANd Shorty -I hear ya re: all the fish! I loathe and despise any and all fish (cannot even stand the smell of tuna) so XMAS EVE is the one day a year that I actually DON'T pigout

My family doens't really do anything on Christmas Eve. I used to stay hoem & watch movies & then go out to for Chinese food or get take out with my parents when I lived home. Now I go to DH's grandma's house, but I kinda miss staying home.

Re: am i the only one doing nothing on xmas eve??
I'm working on X-mas ever and X-mas day. I haven't been home for Christmas in 11 years, so I guess I'm used to it. I am always amazed at the number of people that fly on Christamas- and how NASTY people can be! It never fails that in my 11 years of flying on Christmas, some jack-@ss gets snotty. Thankfully I have a really stupid Santa hat that I've started to wear- it's hard to be nasty to someone wearing a silly hat. FI and I have PROMISED that next year we will both take off next year to celebrate our first Christamas as DH and DW

Awwh, Michi if you're down with coming out east, you can certainly spend the day w/us. I know Amber would love to see you. Probably going to see some lights and hit midnight mass at the Lutheran Church.
