I never thought the day would come... but I think my parents are more liberal than I am... For whatever reason they did not think I was going to take my FH's last name!!
Am I being too old fashioned or is that still pretty much the norm when it comes to getting married??
Any ladies keeping their last names because now I'm having an internal debate with myself and think I might have chosen my user name too soon hehe jk but I figured why not throw this out there and see if anyone else has experienced this.

Re: Am I Too Old Fashioned?
i think in this day and age...it's really up to you... some people find it a hassle to deal with the name changing process while others still love the idea of taking on another persons name.
for me personally, i'm planning on taking my FH's name... 1 b/c my own last name is something and no one seems to be able to pronounce and 2, out of respect for him.

Oh my gosh that's so funny ;)
Yeah I never thought twice about it until my parents said something about the hassle of changing my name, but I completely agree with you, I want to do it out of respect for him and at the same time I think it's a really sweet tradition =)

Re: Am I Too Old Fashioned?
honestly, i really don't want to change my last name ... but i am changing it because if/when FH and I have kids, i want to all be unified with the same name.
I will be using my maiden name as my middle name though so my 'original' identity won't be completely gone

I'm taking my fiances name although I like to tease him with how is he going to feel being Mr. Walsh (my last name.) I don't think its old fashioned. I don't want a hyphenated name and it'd be silly for both of us to be hyphenated.

Re: Am I Too Old Fashioned?
I am definitely taking FH's last name.
I find that women who are in a position at work where they have been there for many years and are more 'upper management' keep their own last names as to avoid confusion in the work place with clients. Another option you could consider is hyphenating.

Re: Am I Too Old Fashioned?
It's completely your decision. I did not take DH's name and it is not a problem between us. When we do have children, they will have his last name - not mine but it won't mean we aren't a family.
I did indicate on our marriage license that I will be using his name so I do have that option if in some point in the future I want to be called Mrs. _________.

This is why I will be changing my name. Plus I just plain like his last name. LOL! If I was marrying some guy with the last name Focker, I might just keep my name.

I work w quite a few women who changed their names legally to their husband's after marriage but just didn't change it at work. I'll probably do that...maybe. lol

I don't think you're being old fashioned. IF you want to take it, then take it. I'm definitely taking FH's name, but my parents (who i thought were pretty conservative as well - at least more than I am), didn't think I was taking FH's last name either. I'm graduating from law school in a month so I guess they figured I'd want to keep my professional name the same as when I first start practicing, but I could really care less.

I am keeping my maiden name for professional reasons. All of my degrees and admission certificates will be in my maiden name.

Re: Am I Too Old Fashioned?
It's funny because I NEVER, EVER thought I would change my name. But, for some reason, I want to have the same name as my future husband. I mean I was really sure that I would always keep my name. I think I'm using a hyphen for work though.

You can so do what you want.
I def decided to take my FH's last name. The main reason is when we have kids I want the school to call and ask for Mrs. I dont want to have a diff last name than the kids.
But thats me. So do what YOU want and dont let anyone pressure you!!

Re: Am I Too Old Fashioned?
When I was considering going to school to get my PhD I told FH that I wanted to keep my last night. He wasn't happy but I think he would have let it go. However, I am not doing that any longer so I will take his last name. I almost feel a little bad to give up my name but I want us to be united as a family with the same name and especially when we have children I would want us to all have the same name.

I still think most women take their husband's last name. At least the women in my family and that I know..
