Am I Too Old Fashioned?

Original post by SoonToBeMrsONeill

I never thought the day would come... but I think my parents are more liberal than I am... For whatever reason they did not think I was going to take my FH's last name!!

Am I being too old fashioned or is that still pretty much the norm when it comes to getting married??

Any ladies keeping their last names because now I'm having an internal debate with myself and think I might have chosen my user name too soon hehe jk but I figured why not throw this out there and see if anyone else has experienced this.

At first i wanted to hyphenate it for work purposes only, but now I'm just taking his last name!

I used to be completely adamant about never changing my last name. But that changed when I met FH. However, I am still unsure of what to do. He is completely fine with whatever I decide.

i am keeping my name and adding FH's on to the end. so like if my name were lauren brown and FH's name were michael smith, my new name would be lauren brown smith. oh and obv im keeping my middle name, too.

I'm def taking FH's last name. I've always known that I wouldn't keep my name once I got married.

honestly, i really don't want to change my last name ... but i am changing it because if/when FH and I have kids, i want to all be unified with the same name.

I will be using my maiden name as my middle name though so my 'original' identity won't be completely gone

You can so do what you want.

I def decided to take my FH's last name. The main reason is when we have kids I want the school to call and ask for Mrs. I dont want to have a diff last name than the kids.

But thats me. So do what YOU want and dont let anyone pressure you!!

I don't have an issue being addressed as Mrs. _____________ but I identify myself as Ms. _________ UNLESS it's for something couple-related (i.e., a purchase we make together, etc.).

I hyphenated.

I spent the first 1/2 year after we got engaged swearing that i wouldn't change my last name... FH wasn't happy and kept trying to persuade me otherwise. I just really like my name! I think slowly though I am coming to the realization that it would be nice to be unified under one name when we go out together, when we have kids, etc. So now, I don't know. i think in the end I will do it but I'll be really sad to change my name to something that sounds more lame in my opinion!! lol

seems like alot of people now hyphenate their last names to keep their maiden name but also take their married name.

I changed my last name and i didnt find the name change process to be a hassle at all. You will be surprised how easy it is especially with credit cards. The only P.I.T.A was going to the DMV but if you go at a good time you can be in and out in no time.

You're not being old fashioned at all. My dad said the same thing, but I'm doing it because I won't feel like we're truly married unless I do, and I want to have the same last name as my children.

Trust me I thought about keeping my maiden name. My married name is too damn complicated, but I finally decided that I would definitely take his name.

Oh gosh hahaha, yeah I'm happy that the FH has a pretty simple last name, and I completely agree, it has just been something that I always wanted to do... I see it as part of the wedding package: white dress, check! tiered cake, check! new last name, check! :P

Not that any one who hasn't taken their husband's last name 'isn't really married' I know it's a personal choice and either way as long as you are in a happy marriage it should not matter :)

Re: Am I Too Old Fashioned?

Im taking FH's last name because 1) its shorter & 2) no one can pronounce my last name now

If it wasnt for those reasons I would keep my last name.
