What the hell is going on with these American children, and school system(cause I know it is not like this in other places). They are out of control. FMIL and I having more chit chat last night and she tells me that you all now have to sit the children in groups to teach them? What good is that going to do but cause more chatter. Children getting stabbed IN school, I would NEVER send my child to chool in nyc, just depressing. SHe is so bummed she is retiring in June

Re: TOday's youth
this is a LOADED question.....
I think it has to do with a variety of things:
-the decline of morality in this country -the increase of the cost of living requiring 2 parents to work just to stay afloat -the increase of drug use and STDs etc -violent video games

Re: American schools and students
also in the city, there is the columbia writers program that teachers are FORCED to teach and there is now a lack of creativity on the teachers part and the whole day is structured and boring and the kids are having their whole careers based upon one test that even if they are good students but fail this test, they will be left back. a lot of teachers are HATING bloomburg for this new tactic...everyone is suffering and nobody sees the point in it. it is sad!

Working at a university I can tell you for sure that US kids know NO MATH!!! Even the ones that do well in Math in elemtnary and high school know very little compared to students from just about every other country.

Re: American schools and students
I'm with MrsTC on this one -- the rising cost of living, which so often requires households to be dual-income, is partially to blame. I would also add that thanks to large-scale, barely-regulated capitalism, corporations can and do demand longer and longer hours from their workers. Children and teenagers are home alone more and more, and sorely lacking the guidance they need. Even though many Americans love to trumpet their 'family values,' the system we live in destroys the precious commodity of family time.
A great quotation on this issue from sociologist Arlie Hochschild: “On one hand, the work of caring for young and old seems to have moved down in honor and monetary reward, and become work to get out of, to pass on to someone who can’t get a better job. On the other hand, care has moved up in ideological importance, as part of an intense and hazy quest to create a kinder, gentler family and nation. Ideologically, ‘care’ went to heaven. Practically, it’s gone to hell.”

Re: American schools and students
Don't get me started on this one!!
First let's start with Albany and the wonderful Regents up there who have been out of the classroom so long that they would not know what one looks like! They have no idea what the students are like today! They make all of these outrageous requirements and the end result is that we are raising a generation of stressed out young adults instead of kids.
Then lets start with the No child left behind piece of crap legislation.
Well let's see I have 3 students that are INSANE, I am not making a generalization, this is a FACT! They have diagnoisis' and everything. One of them MUST be escorted where he goes by his OWN assistant! They 3 boys are in the room with 25 other students who are trying to learn.
We are giving these students every modifications under the sun. I have students that are not ALLOWED to take notes in class, they are not ALLOWED to be penalized for their spelling mistakes. I mean give me a break, these students will never have to write later in life?
Then there all the rules about discplining them. You can only give them detetions and suspension for certain things and ONLY after certain actions have been taken.
Then there are the parents. Many of them are too busy to preoccupied and completely lack parenting skills. I still love the comment of one parent to one of the teachers in my building. ' I don't call you when he doesn't make his bed don't call me when he doesn't do his homework' Or that parent that I was calling to notify her that her son is endanger of failing my class and she would not return my calls. I am REQUIRED to notify them so I call several times. Finally 3 weeks later she left a message- STOP CALLING I DON'T CARE!!!
This is just the tip of the iceberg IMO. Those on the board know that I ADORE my students. They are amazing and I am blessed each day when I am with them but the outside forces make it AWFUL!
If you want more venting please let me know and I will be more than happy to continue this after 4:00pm
group work or cooperative learning is 100000 times more affective that 'chalk and talk'
there is tons of research on this...but from my own experience it is one of the best methods to use...
yes there is more chatter...but people (adults included) learn best when they are held accountable for the information and/or they have to teach it to someone else.
as for no child left behind...I am actually for it...

IMO the 'chalk and talk' is what taught discipline and respect for teachers, which is what is greatly lacking the NYC public schools. FRIGHTENINGLY so!

I disagree...as a former NYC teacher we were encouraged to use coorperative learning (which is also what my undergrad training was in) and I was definitely more respected than the chalk and talk teachers...students like to go to fun classes...boring ones are turn offs...and I was never disrespected

THANK YOU!!!!!!!!!!! I had all talk and chalk teachers and I enjoyed their classes as well. Why does chalk and talk equate with boring. The school system stinks. Children looking all grown going to school looking like they are full blown adults. These children are very disrespectful. I have NEVER heard of a teacher in that has not been disrespected in some way, but I guess it is was one perceives as disrespectful.
My FMIL says that they have to put up a bulletin board now, nonsense. Mike bloomberg giot rid of all the detention centers so all these bad *** kids are walking around being violent. Just plain nonsense. Making tests that is recognized by one state only, yet you tell kids they can't graduate even though they are going to college in California...........just ridiculous

Considering this is what I have been going to school for for 8 years...I think I can say that there is almost no research that says chalk and talk is in any way more affective than cooperative learning...
and bulletin boards are immensely important...who doesn't like to see their achievements displayed? I'm sure your mom put your work on the fridge when you were younger...
I don't agree with the dentention...but I imagine thats about money...
as for the Regents exam...they are a farse...in the Global Studies exam alone you can get 40% of your multiple choice right and 40% of your essay right - and still PASS!!! yes 40% = passing...it is all on a curve...
don't be fooled by NYS' exams...

Exactly so if it is no more or less effective why should the teacher not have complete control of his/her classroom? Bulletin boards are quite irrelevant considering other things that the administration should be focusing on, bewtween lesson plans, tests, grading and all that it is just unneeded stress for teachers. And I bring it up because FMIL says that was was the supervisor brought up. My FMIL school ran out of chalk...a school RUNS OUT OF CHALK, unheard of.......to me that is bigger than any builletin board. How are you supposed to function if you don't even have the proper tools. ANd why on earth are these children NOT wearing a uniform????????

Re: American schools and students
i think it's #1 the parents. as other people mentioned the two parents working, the increase in single parent households etc. have done nothing to help kids. #2 i think it's the fact that no one takes responsibility for themselves anymore. we are always looking for someone to blame. if a kid fails the parents say well the teacher stinks. no, your kid stinks teach them how to work hard, have respect for elders and to be responsible for themselves!!!!!!!!
Bulletins boards are easy...cheap and boost student self esteem...
but I agree with you...not having supplies is unacceptable...when I went to the suburbs I was so upset how much was wasted...the chalk was less than an inch long and teachers would throw it out...meanwhile in the city if we had a piece that long...it was a luxury...

And also may serve to de-motivate other students. What she also wanted was a word a day bulletin board not a regular one........like each week put up a new word or something......and somebody please tell me why these children are not wearing UNIFORMS?????????

I am currently applying to Grad School for my MS in Education and am beginning to rethink my decision. Yikes!
Would everyone have become teachers if you knew what you know now?
