What the hell is going on with these American children, and school system(cause I know it is not like this in other places). They are out of control. FMIL and I having more chit chat last night and she tells me that you all now have to sit the children in groups to teach them? What good is that going to do but cause more chatter. Children getting stabbed IN school, I would NEVER send my child to chool in nyc, just depressing. SHe is so bummed she is retiring in June
I did...and will say it over and over again...the worst decision I EVER made in my career was leaving the NYC schools - unfortunately I left for money...but I learned that money does not buy happiness...teaching in the NYC schools was the best experience in my life...I looked forward to going everyday...I worked with some of the most intelligent people...
Swags...thank you so much...my classroom never had any disrespect...nor did MOST of my colleagues...there are some people that are not cut out for teaching...
as for school uniforms...the Supreme Court ruled in Tinker v Des Moines that students have freedom of speech (symbolic speech) with their clothing...
but I am all for dress codes...no middrifts...no short shorts or skits...etc

Re: American schools and students
Nobody was trying to ruin your day..... .......I have seen my FMIL with her classes and SHE IS A PHENOMENAL teacher. Tutoring kids at her home and such at nighttime....that student now attends Pace University. And then she has to buy her own chalk, no one on this planet can tell me that that makes any sense. She has been in the 'trenches' for more than 30 years and to see her this sad about the school system bugs me so hooray for you, for having a wonderful time tiht your kids, I hope they provided you with chalk. And as far as me changing anything that is ridiculous, I can complain as much as I want because I have spent time in NYC high school so I know exactly what goes on. I was on my student government, and I hit many roadblocks as to what I could and could not write in the school paper, and issues my principal would address. Don't try to tell me that it is all about the people changing it, cause just like people trying to knock some sense into people about those ridiculous regents exams they are not listening. And about the uniforms it makes no sense. It is no hair of my back whether they wear it or not, but 12 year olds wearing makeup to school and baring midriffes is ridiculous. And I am generalizing because it holds true for all us high school, no one wears a uniform or did I miss something. And kids in the home, is a whole other story. Sure parents are to hold some responsibilit but so is the school. I never said teachers should be 'raising' these children. And regardless, I was talking about policy makers and not teachers, if you choose to take it that way all up to you..do what you will
Jennbaby...we wear uniforms show up to school on time, work hard and are VERY VERY respectful.
ahhh.......now I am done

NYChick this is not meant toward you or anyone else personally but I have a question.
If people don't like America so much, why do they stay here?

Re: American schools and students
A lot of foreign-born people stay here in the U.S. because other places are worse in various ways... fewer job opportunities, lower wages, fewer personal rights, et cetera. But, just because many people would prefer to stay in the States doesn't mean that the US is perfect, and also doesn't mean that these people have no right to criticize American policies and practices they find problematic.

No place is perfect. No one is forced to stay in the US and I think people here should be greatful!

Of course, no place is perfect. And I agree that people should be grateful for the rights that they enjoy. But I also think that one of those rights is the right to criticize -- after all, this country was built by people who didn't like certain policies and fought for change. That's what I meant.
