America's 10 Biggest Wastes of Money

I found this pretty interesting:

At least weddings are happy occasions where families and friends come together to celebrate love. I think its a good way to spend money andhopefully something you only get to do once. I think cigarettes should be number one. FH never has any money to contribute to our savings because he has tons of bills and rent and car payments...BUT he seems to have enough $$ to keep up his pack a day habit. I'm bitter about it....can you tell?

i'm going to give my 2 cents here.... most of those items ARE A WASTE OF MONEY!!!

i, even, agree that a wedding is a waste of money (yes i said it)..... BUT....

in my case, planning my wedding has helped me mend some very CHARRED, not just burned, bridges with family.

for that.... i'll give EVERY SINGEL PENNY I HAVE... ***but i won't tip

***reference to my rant post

i actually agree with most of those... especially the wedding one!
we spent less than 20 grand on our wedding, and it was a GREAT day, we had people tell us it was the most fun wedding they ever went to, etc. we went to a wedding this weekend that cost at least double ours- and while it was extrememly gorgeous, they are still just as marrired as DH and i- they're just doubly in debt!
theres some other ones i agree with, but i'm TOTALLY guilty of! DH and i go to starbucks every night with our friends and spend 7 or 8 bucks... i also just bought a new car with all the options
but hey, the way i figure, we're still managing to svae a good chunk of money, and now is the time for us to do this kind of stuff- before we have kids to take care of

Ha, I'm totally there with you. It's a waste to spend SOOO much money on a wedding because you can do it for a lot less, but I'm doing it because I want to!!!

ETA - of these 10

Extravagant weddings
Premium” coffee-to-go
Expensive option packages on new cars
Sports memorabilia
Cigarettes
Impulse Internet buys
Gambling
Fuel-inefficient vehicles
Fast Food
Christmas shopping

I'm an offender of the weddings, coffee, car packages, impulse internet buys, gambling, fuel-inefficient vehicles and Christmas shopping. I guess I'm your average American! So sad!

It's pretty ironic that I am reading this today. I just got off the phone with my mom a few hours ago, after she told me my wedding was a big waste of money. Yet she smokes at least a pack of cigarettes a day. I wish I had thought of that when I was on the phone with her!

I think that the point was that a wedding is a waste of money if it is simply done to have a giant affair that is better than, bigger than and more elegant than the next persons and not as a celebration of your love and commitment.

I think the biggest point was that fully HALF of these marriages will end in divorce! Of course we all go in with the greatest expectations and hearts full of love, but it is hard to ignore that 50% of the people who get married don't stay married. Imagine spending $30,000 on a party to celebrate a day that in 5 years many people would rather forget!!!!

I only pray that each of us is in the 50% who get married and STAY happily married!

ETA:
Extravagant weddings - Me.. sorta... not spending more than$25G... but still more than I ought to.

Premium” coffee-to-go - Me... every Monday I stop at Starbucks to kickstart my heart with a tall non-fat latte

Expensive option packages on new cars _ Not me! i drive my mom's old car.

Sports memorabilia - Hell NO.

Cigarettes - Double Hell No.

Impulse Internet buys - Nope... never.

Gambling - I have gambled 3 times. Each time I won! WHOO HOO!

Fuel-inefficient vehicles - No SUV here.

Fast Food - Pizza.. every friday night.

Christmas shopping - YES! I LOVE IT! I GO NUTS!!!

I do agree that weddings are really expensive and it is a waste spending so much, but I have to say I am saving this money and I have never been able to save before. Now I can save almost 1500 a month. I would spend that on clothing and starbucks Hopefully we get close to it back and then I have saved money. It really is expensive 20k for the hall and some people pay more.

It's sad but true...but in the end, we all want to do it, chose to do it...and as long as we're happy with no regrets...it's all good!!!

If I had kids, I would be going nuts at Christmastime too! Just wait until my neice or nephew is born! Next Christmas I'm gonna have to take out a loan just for his or her gifts!

Re: America's 10 Biggest Wastes of Money

I do agree that weddings are a bit of a waste of money for only one day and even contemplated doing the Vegas thing. But, how could I pass up having all of our family and friends there that day when we celebrate our love for each other. It might ony be one day, but it's a day we can all remember and look back on in our (very expensive) photos and videos. After reading that list, I realize how:
1- I am SO glad that I quit smoking four years ago.
2- Thankfully I have no interest in gambling.
3- I don't even want to know how much FH has spent on his sports memorabilia (he has signed balls, signed pictures, around 50 jerseys)...and there is a whole list of what he wants next
4- I better cut back on my Starbucks habit...I guess I should dust off my coffee maker and put it to use

I don't think it is a waste of money, especially to celebrate your union and love!
