Amnio or no?????

Amnio or no?????

I just had my monthly check-up today and the doctor talked to us about amnios. I'm debating whether or not to have one. Anyone have experience with this? I know there are risks but is it worth it?

I'm not an expert on anything..but I did hear this story from a friend at work.
A woman and her husband had invitro and she was in her 6th month. The doctor did the amnio and something happened to the amniotic sac and the baby was aborted. Of course, this was an extremely high risk pregnancy.

This was one of the horror stories that I had to hear when I'm pregnant too. I don't think I'll be doing that test. Not because of this story but there is no history of downs syndrome in my family. Plus...I heard it's a biggggg needle!!! Yikes.

We decided aganist it. I'm 25, my husband has a first cousin with downs but my OBGYN doesn't seem to think it should worry us since it is the child of my FIL's sister. If it was my side or my MIL's he said he would push me more. Also we are Roman Catholic so no matter what we are planning on dealing with what God has given us and anyway Maura (my dh's cousin) is one of the greatest people on earth you will ever meet.
In our opinion the risk is not worth it.

I think its completely up to you as to whether you feel the need to have that test done.

My cousin did have it with her first child and based on the results they told her that he had some type of illness (I think think it was anything tooo major, but I dont remember 12 years later what they told her it was) well needless to say after months of worrying, she had a very healthy baby boy!

When My mom was pregnant with me, they asked her if she wanted an ammino because she was 38 year old. She said no, and her reasoning was that even if something was wrong she was going to have the baby so why should she spend months being upset/worried if something was wrong, when she could instead spend those months excited about the baby coming.

Good Luck making your decision.

My doc did a sonogram to measure the skin folds on the back of the babies neck. Based on that result they may or may not reccomend an amnio. Maybe you can ask your doc to do that.

I think that its worth it only if you have some risk factors for genetic disorders (whether age or family history) and if you'd be willing to take some action if something is found. If you are young and have a clean bill of health, or if you'd have the baby no matter what, I don't think its worth doing.

I wouldn't have one. I would not terminate the pregnancy if something was wrong and I wouldn't want to risk having a miscarriage from it. I am under 35 so I didn't feel it would be worth it.

My mother had one when she was pregnant with me. She was 36 She didn't want it b/c she is catholic and she was thrilled to be pregnant but the doctor required it. She said she was very nervous but the procdure itself went fine.

You have to do what you feel is right. Does dr. want it for a specific reason (family history of aliment or something)?

The doctor said it's really our choice, but I qualify for the test because I'm 36. I went yesterday for the special sono and more blood work and the results will be back in a week. After the results, we have the option of the amnio.
