I just wanted to share something I have been thinking about. I wonder if you ladies will agree.
I cannot get over how insecure motherhood has made me. I have never second guessed myself in so many directions in one day.
I have been a lead singer in a band. I have auditioned in front of terrifying directors. I have acted on stage in NYC theaters. I have run a multi-million dollar a year company. I have written copy for websites, brochures, and press releases for high profile clients. I have negotiated mortgages, contracts and insurance policies. I have overseen construction on two homes. I have gone to college and graduate school. I have done all this and more for 32 years.
And NEVER have I doubted myself as I do now. This little person has triggered a part of me that I didn't even know existed. A part that isn't sure, a part that is terrified. A part of me that is born from awe and wonder. I simply cannot understand the gravity of her and therefore I question every minute of it. How can it be that they even let me take her home?! How can it be that suddenly I don't know how to do anything?! Where do I go for the answers and how will I know if they are the right ones?! Where did this gut instinct come from? And why didn't I have it before?
As I sit here and ponder this however, I realize that I just answered the question that Snook had about the belly button. That Melissa had about the onesies. That Alvatorre had about the diet. That Nancy had about the night sweats. And I realize how much I am learning every day. That I am learning a language that sounded so foreign only months ago. This process is just so incredible. I truly feel that as much as I had accomplished before...well none of it could hold a candle to what I accomplish in one minute with my daughter.
It's neat. It's such a damn blessing.

Re: An Observation from a New Mommy
That was beautiful Jenny!!!!
And oh so true!! I have worked in day care for *gulp* 19 years I have so much experience it is frightnening, but I feel I am the worlds most nervous nellie mother. My friends and my staff can't believe it. I hear over and over again 'I never thought YOU would be like this'
I'm getting 4 teeth pulled out of my head on Friday and I am petrified about what the effect will be on Damien not be able to nurse for 24 hours.

Re: An Observation from a New Mommy
I third the motion for keeping a journal for your baby. I've been keeping one for Rebecca since the day she was born. It has all of her 'firsts', every new event, all her doctors visits, and whenever I am just awestruck by the wonders of her (which is CONSTANT), I write something to her. I plan to keep this journal for her entire life, to give to her on her wedding day. I wish my mother had kept one like this for me, in her own handwriting. I would treasure it forever.

Re: An Observation from a New Mommy
Reading that was a great start to my day. Thanks for sharing and for reassuring me that I'm not alone in the feelings that I go through (panic and terror at times) from time to time.

Re: An Observation from a New Mommy
This really is an amazing post. I never really second guessed myself, nor have I ever questioned my actions. But now I have a fear of going on a short walk with my husband or by myself, while Madeleine rests with her grandma. I have these irrational fears that someone is going to run up and kill me and my poor little girl with be left motherless. I know it's silly, and I hope it passes soon... but I just hate to be a moment without her.
It's weird. I just never thought I would be a mommy and now that I am, it's mind-blowing!

What a great post Jenny! I too have wondered how they could possibly let me take this little creature home. It still amazes me that 5 months later she is actually growing and thriving!
