Ancient Wedding Traditions

Ancient Wedding Traditions

Is anyone including any ancient wedding traditions in their ceremonies/receptions? I was just doing some research online and there are a lot of websites dedicated to this. FH and I are both Italian and Irish. He is also part German. I thought it would be nice, one way or another, to incorporate something from each nationality.

Any ideas?

I'd like to as well. I am a mix of Eastern European Jewish (Russian, Austrian, and Polish, I believe, but I don't really feel a strong connection to the countries as we' ve been in the US for a while) and my FH is Irish/German Catholic. So, because of all the mixing we're planning our own ceremony to incorportate those traditions that resonate with us. I'd especially love to read up on some of the old Celtic wedding traditions to reflect his Irish side, and just other traditions in general. One of the nice things about planning a non-religious interfaith wedding is that, although it gets complicated in a lot of ways, you have a lot of flexibility in terms of being able to do pretty much whatever you want with no priest or rabbi to say that you can't

I'm still a bit far removed to be planning the ceremony, but it's definitely one of the things I'm looking forward to.

I can only help you with the Irish part. One thing is to carry a horseshoe in your bo-k. Obviously a charm, not a real one, but it is suppose to bring good luck.

I am...its tradition for my culture (West Indian Trinidad... Fh's mother is from the same place as well) to give away rum cake so that is one of our favors

umm, sounds delicious. I love rum cake.

The other traditions I've heard of are the Italian candy coated Almonds, breaking a vase, and serving a lot of food!

Apparently, at German weddings, the wedding program is more like a newspaper with articles about the couple. Supposedly, they used to sell it at the reception to make money for the couple.

I thought these were pretty interesting, and I def. plan to put my own twist on the traditions.

Thanks for your input girls!
