and Guest spin-off

and Guest spin-off

This was brought to my attention while putting our addresses together for the calligrapher- and then I remembered when reading someone's response on the other thread..

We are inviting one of FMIL's cousins with a guest.. he has a 12 year old son and a girlfriend. We are addressing to and guest cause no one knows the status of the relationship..

My question is- do people know 'and guest' means a date, not your child? FMIL said she would call to let this guy know- but, I would think that would be implied-- what do you guys think?

If the GF is serious, so to speak, the thing to do 'officially' is to put down the adults name. While many will know it refers to the adult and not the child, some will not. Alternately, if you have a talkative relative and need to put 'and guest' you can have them make mention that no kids are invited. It is NOT clearly implied that kids are not an option with and guest, in short, is what I am saying. This per the invite lady and expert.

FMIL says it is an on and off again relationship- so, that is why we are not addressing it to the both of them..

I am just saying that- if I got an 'and guest'- I would never bring a child with me (if I had one of course)- I would know that it is supposed to be a date.. ESPECIALLY of it is a black tie formal event-- I don;t know how people can confuse that? I tjust seemed weird to me.

Randi:
Let's be clear. I agree with you. I would know (and I think most women our age, brides especially) would know that it is not appropriate to substitute a child BUT there are lots of people who do not. My sis, who had no children outside of BP invited had two people, sophisticated people, bring teen aged and preteen aged stepkids as a guest-very much a black tie, hi end affair as well. I fear I am reading too much into your reply and I know that it is a mistake to do so but -- I am just messenger here-->you asked and I answered with my experience. If you are not worried about it, cool. But otherwise, you may be well served to have someone say it out to them. I have learned sometimes it is better to SAY specifically what you mean to people when it comes to stuff that is wedding related and their jobs.
