And the nightmare continues...

Original post by bearsbabe_113

Twenty-two days after my father passed away, his sister, my beloved aunt, joined him and the rest of her family. And the fog that I've been in, has now become much thicker and I'm having a very hard time finding my way out.

This was a complete shock to all of us because my aunt was a person who lived life to the fullest. She would be 88 on March 12, the day after my birthday, but the woman looked like she was about 65. She still wore heels and makeup and WORKED as a meat wrapper in the butcher dept. of Scaturro's (a local supermarket in Astoria). And now I have to celebrate my b'day alone for the first time in my life. Not only won't my father be there, but neither will my aunt, who always shared a cake with me.

I took off on Thursday because we finally bought a new car and I had stuff to do and I also had to renew my license. The day started off happy and ended in a big blur. I had just dropped my mother off when she called me to say that the paramedics were at my aunt's and she was going over there. I didn't want her to go alone since we just went through the whole thing w/my father, so I decided to meet her at the hospital of friggin doom and death, Astoria General (now Mt. Sinai of Queens). I was praying the whole way to God and my father that everything was ok, but of course, nobody heard me.

And it was deja vu all over again. I get there and the security guard and nurses wouldn't let me in until the dr came to take me to a room where my mother was crying on the phone that my aunt passed away.

They say lightening never strikes twice, well it did for my family. February was the shortest month on the year, but it was the longest month of my life, not to mention the worst. Not only did my father and aunt pass away, but it's also the anniversary of their parents.

I left that hospital shell-shocked because I couldn't believe that God did this to me again. My poor mother, had to go through this all over again. She was just starting to get used to the fact that my father wasn't coming home and now she got hit with this. They were very close. I was extremely close to my aunt and another piece of my heart is forever gone.

I feel like I have nothing inside anymore. I was (and still am) a mess this whole weekend through the wake. My cousin was joking to my mother and said 'it's a good thing Debbie's job gave her the number of a grief counsellor' because they all think I'm on the verge. And I think I am also. Plus I'm just like my aunt and I'm the 'emotional' one. They lost their mother and grandmother, but they were all comforting me.

What are the chances that one family can be back in the same funeral parlor 3 weeks later? Or the same hospital for that matter?

I still haven't accepted the fact that my father is never coming home and now I have to deal with my aunt also. How is it possible that the 2 biggest influences of my life have left me with 3 weeks time of each other forever????? Why did they leave me???? Yet again, Gianna is never going to know another great person in her life.

I know that my aunt has been very depressed since her baby brother died. Her last words at the wake and cemetary to him were 'Dominic you left me all alone' and I told her she wasn't, she had me. But she didn't listen. My mother yelled at my father that he had to take his sister, so now leave us alone and pray for us. I hope he's listening because I really can't take anymore of this.

My aunt was in good health, but very heartbroken. My mother thinks she died of a broken heart. One of her co-workers came over for coffee for the first time and my aunt stood up and said 'I don't feel well' and collapsed on the floor, never to be woken up again. That poor woman who was there. I thank God she wasn't alone though and that she didn't suffer, but still it doesn't help any.

I feel like I am a walking zombie. Yesterday I went over to my aunt's and my cousin's were there cleaning out the apt and I had a hard time and I had to tell them to stop. I haven't let my mother do this yet, but they have to do this because the landlord wants it cleaned out.

Yet again, what should be a happy time for me is the worst time of my life.

Thanks for listening to me again and for all your support, I greatly appreciate it.

Debbie not sure if this will help or not but..
when my nanny was dying (she had lung cancer) she told me that it was okay that she was dying because she missed her mom a lot and hadn't seen her or kissed her in over 50 years. Then she said she knew her brothers were waiting for her and the first thing they were going to do was play cards, just like when she was young.

So your daddy and your Aunt are not alone. They are with their parents and a parents love NEVER dies

Deb, I have no words. It is a good sign that you are coming here to write things out - its a good form of therapy. It would make me really happy to hear that you were going to see a grief counselor. I would hate to see your wonderful spirit slip any further without a professional there to lift you up.

Your family is in my thoughts. Please try to keep your head above water....

Debbie - can I just say that I wish I could babysit for you while you and Joe go away for a week alone, to some beautiful place, where you could just sit and enjoy each other, and take a moment to breathe and be happy again! Although then again, if you're like me, and I think you are, you would WANT to take Gianna with you so you could enjoy her. It's crazy what you've been through, and I truly wish I could help you in some way. My heart is with you and your wonderful family. May you see NO MORE tragedy!!!

I can not imagine the sense of loss and the grief you must be feeling at this time. I am so so sorry for you and for your family for the tremendous loss of your father and your aunt.

Although, this may be of no solace to you now...know that you now have another angel above to watch over Gianna....

My thoughts and prayers are with you at this time!

Re: And the nightmare continues...

Ok, so I've been on the verge of tears all morning because today is one month that my father is gone and I didn't sleep all night because all I kept seeing was my aunt's house all empty, which is bothering me more then I can tell you. I won't let my mother go through my father's stuff yet, but I know my cousins had to do it because my aunt's landlord is a real ******* and had the balls to ask for the rent money!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

But my tears finally spilled out when I read this thread.

I would love to FM each and every one of you, but I don't have it in me, forgive me. Just know that I thank each and every one of you from the bottom of my heart and I truly appreciate all of your love, support and comfort during this time of hell.

Michele31 -- you are right and I know that at the end, my father was telling me that his parents were calling him and he would 'talk' to his mama everyday. I also know in the bottom of my heart that my aunt was heartbroken without her baby brother and the rest of her family. I have some comfort knowing that they are all together now, but it still doesn't stop my heart from breaking because they aren't here with me. Selfish, but that's the way I feel.

For the first time in my life I will be celebrating my birthday (although I really don't want to celebrate it at all, but my mother and MIL were telling me to stop being ridiculous) next week without my father and sharing my cake with my aunt. It should be happy because it'll be my first birthday as a mommy, but I wish they were here to share that with me.

As for the counselor -- I have the number next to my phone at home, but I don't know if I'm ready for that yet. I'm trying to work through this on my own, I hope I can, but if I feel that I really can't, I will call.

I know I have Gianna, who is the light at the end of this fog encased tunnel, Joe, my family and friends, both here and at home, but I just feel incredibly lonely.

As long as you have us, you will NEVER be alone! And whenever you look into the eyes of Gianna, your dad and aunt will be smiling back at you, for they are in her now, and will always be where she is, watching over her and you, protecting you both.

I wish I knew the right words to say.

I am glad that you have this site as an outlet... but please don't feel that you have to take all of these emotions on yourself.

I wish I could say something that will make it better, but I know that I can't. I am so so very sorry for your losses and the hurt and sorrow you have in your heart. This is so difficult. My heart goes out to you and your family. When my grandmother passed away I felt the very same way you did. Numb - it's been over 6 years -- I can't even believe it and I still dream and cry and miss her so much. I wish you a lot of strength and peace. You know that they are with you - watching and loving you from heaven.

Re: And the nightmare continues...

Debbie- I want you to know that it is okay to feel all of what you are going thru. It is normal- even though it is totally unfair. The fog lifts, but your heart is never the same and at some point, I don't know when, you stop crying everyday and you begin to feel a bit less pain and then one day you will smile at a memory instead of crying. I still cry when I miss my grandma's but it isn't everyday anymore and I can remember and smile now. so please know that there is hope! It will not be like this forever, I promise.
Not going to my grandma's house after she died (they sold it right after the funeral) was hard. I mean, I grew up going there. Knowing I would never eat dinner at her house again or see her stuff hanging on the walls was very hard for me. I totally understand what you mean about the house. I would try not to concentrate on that stuff right now. It gets just too overwhelming. You can deal with that later on.
Just know you are never alone. There are too many of us
