That does stink. I would speak with the principal directly & ask why you that has senority over the other person was the one chosen? And explain that you would rather stay in the HS & that strongly believe that having the senoirty over the other person qualifies you to have the position you wish. As it worked for teh original Middle School counselor who wante to move up. You need to speak with the Principal & do it professionaly. Show him/her that unlike him/her you can be professional! Good Luck

OH NO! I'm so sorry to hear that! I imagine that I'd be just as angry, if not more! I hope that you can bear it for a while and keep looking for a position that suits you better. I'm sorry that happened to you!

That is terrible!! I am not sure where you work but is it possible it goes by seniority or the other person filed a grievance?? If you have a union rep I would talk to him/her. There is nothing work than having to start off a year this way. I hope it all works out for you!

I am sorry to hear that. Shouldn't the one to be moved out of the HS position be the one that was there the shorted amount of time? Was that you? FH had the same thing happen to him. He was at the middle school level and got moved down to elementary. I hope everything works out for you!

Having a job in education really stinks sometimes, doesn't it? In real life it seems like you can walk into your boss's office and have a rational conversation that may change the mind of your boss but in education that never happens. I've been screwed over so many times... had my classes changed when I've planned throughout the whole summer, gotten my CTT teacher switched when the only reason I agreed to do CTT was because of the original teacher.
Although this really stinks, give it a try. Originally I never wanted to teach middle school... I was all about high school, especially after doing my student teaching in a high school I loved. But, I got an offer at a middle school and I figured I needed a job so I took it and now I'm so glad I did.
Ride it out, you'll get seniority eventually and then you can be the one deciding where you want to be.
Sorry this is happening to you!

i couldn't agree more. i've been in your shoes--split between MS & HS, vying for 2 years for a HS position only to have it sneakily signed away to the new chairperson's pet. however, the education market s u c k s right now, especially for counselors. i know a good counselor let go at the end of her leave replacement from my school who is dynamite, not to mention trilingual, and she'd give anything for your middle school position. you can respectfully make your feelings known to the person who will receive them the best, get your tenure (if you don't have it yet) and move on when opportunity arises if they choose not to put you where you want to be. in the mean time, be outwardly positive so you can hang on to your highly sought after job.
i'm sorry this happened. i know from personal experience how frustrating it is.

Re: Angry & Upset
I know. Its horrible for me to be upset when lots dont have jobs. But I went through that cr*p for 4 years. I got laid off every year so I finally feel like I am at the point where I got what I finally wanted and then after 1 year it was snatched out of my hands. I am not the one with the lowest seniority either.... thats the messed up thing!!! A new counselor was hired a couple months after me b/c a counselor retired at the beginning of the school year. So I was doing the work of 2 counselors during for months until she came along. And now this is how I am treated. She gets to keep the HS position and I get moved!! It doesn't make sense at all. It is unfair and it is embarassing cause everyone knows its a demotion. So instead of being with my team of Counselors like in HS, I am off on my own. I dont get to participate in prom, the dances, graduation, my students getting into colleges, college fair. This is the stuff I love about counseling. Instead I will be dealing with adolscent social adjustment issues alll day long everyday. The teen girls and teen boys constantly fighting with each other. I am sorry I am just not cut out to be a MS counselor. It might be completely selfish of me to be sad but I have put in a lot of time and hard work to get to where I am and then to have it ripped out of my hands is just sooo upsetting!!!
I don't know how I am going to be positive about this....

Aww that s*cks, I'm so sorry that happened to you!
I would wait a day or two and think about what you want to say to your principal... maybe even write everything down so you don’t get too emotional about things and then talk to him.
Good luck!

Sorry this happened to you! However, I think you should stick it out. Maybe you will enjoy it. I am sorry I can't give you any valuable advice because I don't know about this field but I know this will work out in the end for you!

The pay is the same fortuntely... that would have been a real slap in the face... yikes! The day to day job is very different. I don't get to make my own schedule or have as much contact with the kids. I would be in meetings a lot of the day. I have to do 2x the amount of lunch duties. Its just a lot of different work that i dislike doing... and the parts that I LOVE about counseling I wont be doing anymore. I got in this field to do college and career planning, etc and that is what I am really good at. Doing mediations between teen girls and other MS drama is what Ilike the least about counseling and what a big part of my day would be.

Contact your union rep! FM me if you wanna chat...I know the how you feel I was excessed last year
