I just read an article about a HUGE meat recall, and in it, it said that some workers abused animals who were too sick to walk into the slaughterhouse - pushing animals with forklifts to get them in there. Do things like this make anyone else sooooo incredibly sad that you almost cry???? First of all, I think of the animals actually knowing what's about to happen to them, which I know I shouldn't and which I know is probably not true, but can you imagine these animals being sick to begin with and then knowing they are being PUSHED to their deaths????
Secondly, stories like this just make me sooooo mad and upset. I read them and I kick myself for not going into a field that would allow me to help animals. I always wanted to be a vet, ever since I was 5. If I had the $$, I would go back to school. For now I'll just have to donate whatever money I can to the cause.....
(Those new Pedigree commercials, where the dogs are in cages waiting to get picked out by new owners, makes me cry, seriously.)
ETA: Sorry for the sad vent. I just get soooooo mad when I see poor, defenseless animals being abused and had to comment on it....

Re: Animal Cruelty / Meat Recall
I saw that this morning and was so sad. I know regardless of people's stance on eating meat or not, the animal should be treated w/ some dignity, even if it will eventually become our food. I really hope the people responsible for what I saw on TV have some type of actions brought against them.

Re: Animal Cruelty / Meat Recall
honestly chickens and poultry in general are so abused its sickening. I will never turn vegan but i try my damn hardest to go for free range or even kosher at all costs in order to semi avoid the cruelest treatment.
I have no issue with killing to eat but i have a issue with suffering.

Re: Animal Cruelty / Meat Recall
just reading this made my eyes water. This was one of the reasons that I became a vegetarian. I just can't stand the thought of animals being killed (let alone treated with cruelty) so that i can eat. Not knocking meat lovers out there, this is just my choice. Guess it's because i have a puppy, and 2 birds, and i see how many feelings they have and how they're capable of giving love and being happy..cant help but wonder what makes us think the other animals we eat aren't capable of having feelings and emotions as well?
I just can't bring myself to eat certain foods esp. like veal (baby cows)

This makes me so sick. I hate people who think animals have no feelings. Seriously this is why I joined PETA. This type of stuff happens all the time. I am glad it actually made it to the news for once.

Re: Animal Cruelty / Meat Recall
The really gross thing about it, is those animals most likely had something neurological or systemic that caused them not to be able to walk...............and they still were going to process them as food

Have you ever read 'Fast Food Nation'? They talk a lot about the meat industry and it's really scary how many things could go wrong with contaminants getting into the food supply.

I have not read it, but a friend of mine at an old job did years ago, and she just told me one little bit - about McD's and contamination - and that is the reason I avoid fast food restaurants as much as possible. I have had maybe 4 mcd's hamburgers since then (which was about 6 years ago) and also avoid wendys, burger king and others.

That's the whole reason behind the recall, right? Because they had illnesses that may have made the meat bad?

Re: Animal Cruelty / Meat Recall
i eat meat, but i HATE when i hear these things about how the animals are treated.....its horrible - at least let them have a good life and be treated humanely and slaughtered humanely (ugh i hate that word, but dont know what else to call it)
