**animal lovers** - todays Oprah

Todays Oprah is all about investigations into horrible puppy mills. I already have it sent up to record, but I have to say I don't know how I am going to watch it. I saw the coming attractions and I was disturbed for the rest of the night. But we should be educated on it.

i am big into animal activism so i am really happy that Oprah decided to brave this topic...that woman has alot of influence so I know she can make people stand up against puppy mills. I hope alot of people tune in althought it will be hard to watch.

I can't handle it either. I know what goes on, I have seen the horrible conditions these animals are kept in, and it just made me sick

DO NOT BUY YOUR DOG FROM A PET STORE !

My dog, I got strait from a breeder and went to her home , it was $$$$$ but worth it

I would have adopted a stray, but I had to guarentee a small sized dog ( under 15 pounds )

my dog is from a petstore but when i saw here there i had to take her home i wish i could take them all home...
it wasnt her fault she was there. The point is to stop them from producing so many dogs...there are already so many that need good homes but when you fall in love you just cant help it.

I cant wait to see this because although I know what puppy mills are I always wondered what really went on in these mills by actually seeing it. I know its going to be very sad but at least we can learn what to do about it.

I have two cats and can not fathom the idea of someone hurting them or neglecting them.

I love watching them--I need to make sure that the puppies end up ok. I watch animal cops on animal planet and I cry everytime

oh wow...good for her that she is doing this show. i wish i could watch it but i am at work.

but i got my dog from a breeder. i am happy i did, i wanted a mini dachshund. and when i was 19 i wasn't rolling in dough so i couldnt buy from a pet store. the breeder was actually cheaper. I love him i wouldnt trade him in but i wish i could have bought a dog from those horrible pet stores!

i know it is giving money to the stores- but it is NOT the dogs fault they were put in those horrible situations and if someone can take them out of it then more power to you. my family has gotten dogs from north shore and other shelters my parents are all about adopting dogs from there.

I know, i too fell in love with a petstore dog! I just HAD to have him, and I also wanted to take ALL of them home , they were all so cute!

I had a yorkie who died after i had him for 5 weeks from the 'doggie flu ' and it was a combination of the store and the mill's fault for lack of care ...
IMO the petstores know where these animals come from .

oh the stores def know where they are coming from. and the amount they charge for the dogs is insane. and the cages are never clean they are drinking water out of freaking gerbil spouts i mean how much water can they get out of there...give them freaking bowls seriously and bigger cages and not stick 2-3 dogs in one freaking cage!! ughh its getting me mad. when i go into the stores i always ask to see one and hug it and kiss it and take it out of the cage and play with it but then i feel bad bec i give it back. but i want teh puppy to be able to feel some love you know

I hate when I go into puppy stores and there's 5 dogs in one cage and 4 of them are ganging up on 1. It's hard bc you don't want to give the stores your money but at the same time the puppies are already there. I wonder what they do when a puppy doesn't sell??

Re: **animal lovers** - todays Oprah

I'll be watching. Cooper is from a mill and has a plethora of health problems (most recently... the poor guy just started going bald! If it's not one thing, it's another...)

Girls, just remember that even if we decide to rescue a dog from a pet store just to remove them from those horrible conditions, we are still supporting and funding puppy mills with that purchase.

Avoid pet stores all together if the sight of those poor dogs is too much.

They keep him there and will lower the price until someone bites... if not, they probably ship him off to a shelter that will euthanize him.

HAHA, my dog prefers the gerbil spouts, she doesn't like getting her fur wet, but that is because she is a diva!

It is true that the animal is the victim in this, but I learned my lesson with petstores after I watched my poor pet suffer in and out of the hospital , and the pet store gave me such a hard time about it .

Re: **animal lovers** - todays Oprah

READ THIS.......

Even before her puppy mill episode airs, some dog owners, sportsmen, hunters and breeders were readying for a round of Oprah bashing -- fearing the show's undercover investigation into bad breeders will reflect badly on all breeders.

'My thoughts are that a boycott of Winfrey’s advertisers would be the most effective strategy,' John Yates, director of the Sporting Dog Alliance wrote in an alert to members and anyone else who would listen. 'If several hundred thousand dog owners and breeders were to contact advertisers on the Oprah show and refuse to buy any of their products, they would be forced to take notice.'

'We are not optimistic that it will be a fair, balanced and reasonably objective report,' he adds. 'Based on the normal biased reporting we see about dog breeding, and Winfrey’s close personal ties with animal rights groups, we would expect them to take their cameras into a couple of 'worst case' kennels, and then by inference say or imply that all kennels and breeders are bad.'

You can read his full rant here.

I haven't seen the program yet -- Oprah has dedicated it to her deceased cocker spaniel, Sophie, and it airs this afternoon -- but I have to wonder who's really doing the inferring here.

An investigative report on puppy mills -- puppy mills being, by definition, places that churn out pups in horrid conditions with little thought for their well-being -- is, of course, going to be negative, and in some cases heart-wrenchingly so.

Yes, the report ought to point out that there are good, clean and reputable breeders as well -- but those, rightly, are not its focus, and the kind of footage you're going to see will leave little room for argument on whether the conditions are acceptable.

Organization's like Yates should be attuned to weeding out the bad breeders instead of circling the wagons and planning for a counter-attack.

'How can we fight back against the wealthiest and most powerful media mogul in America? How can we fight that kind of power? How can we fight someone who wills $30 million to her dogs when we’re trying to figure out how to pay last month’s electric bill?' Yates asks.

The internet, is the answer, he says.'One of the beauties of the Internet is that it allows everyone to truly have the rights of free speech and free press. The Internet has become the printing press of ordinary people ...' He goes on to encourage a boycott of Oprah's advertisers.
