Todays Oprah is all about investigations into horrible puppy mills. I already have it sent up to record, but I have to say I don't know how I am going to watch it. I saw the coming attractions and I was disturbed for the rest of the night. But we should be educated on it.

my dog is from a petstore but when i saw here there i had to take her home i wish i could take them all home... it wasnt her fault she was there. The point is to stop them from producing so many dogs...there are already so many that need good homes but when you fall in love you just cant help it.
I know, i too fell in love with a petstore dog! I just HAD to have him, and I also wanted to take ALL of them home , they were all so cute!
I had a yorkie who died after i had him for 5 weeks from the 'doggie flu ' and it was a combination of the store and the mill's fault for lack of care ... IMO the petstores know where these animals come from .
oh the stores def know where they are coming from. and the amount they charge for the dogs is insane. and the cages are never clean they are drinking water out of freaking gerbil spouts i mean how much water can they get out of there...give them freaking bowls seriously and bigger cages and not stick 2-3 dogs in one freaking cage!! ughh its getting me mad. when i go into the stores i always ask to see one and hug it and kiss it and take it out of the cage and play with it but then i feel bad bec i give it back. but i want teh puppy to be able to feel some love you know
HAHA, my dog prefers the gerbil spouts, she doesn't like getting her fur wet, but that is because she is a diva!
It is true that the animal is the victim in this, but I learned my lesson with petstores after I watched my poor pet suffer in and out of the hospital , and the pet store gave me such a hard time about it .
haha i didnt think they could get any water out of there haha but thats cute
but you are right...to see your poor dog go in and out of the hospital is horrible i am sorry you had to go through that.

That guy has got to give Oprah some credit.
She is an animal lover to the fullest extent with pure-bred dogs of her own. I can only imagine that she will not only inform people of how horrible puppy mills are and how we, as animal owners and lovers, can combat them... but she will also inform us on how to go about finding and recognizing a reputable breeder...
Does this guy think we're all robots of Oprah?

I'll be watching. Cooper is from a mill and has a plethora of health problems (most recently... the poor guy just started going bald! If it's not one thing, it's another...)
Girls, just remember that even if we decide to rescue a dog from a pet store just to remove them from those horrible conditions, we are still supporting and funding puppy mills with that purchase.
Avoid pet stores all together if the sight of those poor dogs is too much.
my mini dachshund is loosing hair on his tail, ears and forehead...he is from a breeder. but the vet said some breeds are vulnerable to that condition so i shouldnt worry. the vet actually told me when i brought my dog in for his 1st appt 2 yrs ago before even loosing his hair...so could your little guys lose of hair be due to his type of breed? just wondering maybe ask the vet.

Not sure if it's a breed thing. A few people on the pet board on LIF said it could me mange, but his skin isn't irritated.... We'll probably head to the vet soon.

yeah thats a good idea..i was kinda shocked when i noticed he was starting to loose hair on his tail...he always kinda had it goin on on his ears but not his tail. it looks white in several spots (he is black) its kinda funny. but he went to the vet last weekend and they said he is fine!!
but good luck to him!!!

Aah man i will actually be down at the rescue I volunteer at from 4-7 so I will miss this.. If all the doggies cooperate tonight maybe ill be out intime to watch the rerun.
Our rescue has taken in several dogs from local puppy mills that were broken up and let me tell you the conditions and social problems with these dogs just breaks your heart. NEVER buy a puppy from a store. NEVER. You might think you are doing a good thing and that you are 'rescuing' the dog (oh boy do i hate when people say this). While it is true it is not the dogs fault they are in the situation they are in, and you think you are helping him, you are actually condemning more dogs to this fate and making the puppy mill industry that much worse. For every dog that is purchased it tells the puppy mill to produce more of that breed since its a wanted item. So they breed more and more animals suffer and the cycle starts all over again. The stores cater to the fact that people will buy dogs 'just to save them'. Some places keep the stores dirty and keep the dogs in horrid conditions to make the sympathy sales. DO NOT BECOME A SUCKER! See how many girls on here wanted to buy one just because of the conditions? The stores and the puppy mill industry knows this happens and pray on those good souls who feel they are doing good. You know the saying out of sight, out of mind.. Refuse to shop in any pet store that sells puppies. Period. The dogs that are there will eventually end up in shelters or rescues, and thats where you should be getting them from. Save a dog from a shelter. If the store is not selling dogs, the store will not stock dogs. Its like any type of business, if it doesnt sell the store looses out and will not stock the animal anymore. If the stores dont order puppies than the mills will cut down on breeding. IF THERE IS NO DEMAND THERE IS NO MONEY! and no reason to continue.
Sorry for the extremely long rant. I have been with rescues and in (non dog selling) pet stores for over 10 years. You dont want to know the things I have seen or things I have heard. If you really did you would never consider even buying a food bowl from one of those puppy selling stores again.

I got mine at a pet store too - one with a horrible reputation! But I couldn't leave without him. He was this tiny little 1 1/2 lb chihuahua, crammed in a cage with 3 big-dog puppies! I think of it more as a rescue mission rather than an expensive purchase.
11 years later, he's the best dog!

I don't think I will be able to watch it. I get teary eyed watching the ASPCA commercial
I think Lisa Ling and Oprah should be commended for bringing light to such a disgusting topic. My two pit bulls are rescues and I wouldn't trade them for the world

I want to watch it but I feel like if I do it will be like torturing myself because I will be upset for days after I get upset any time I hear any animal stories like this. I saw a special on HBO once about puppy mills and I am still upset by it. I am glad she is doing the show though because people need to know what is going on so we can get all these puppy mills shut down.
Does anyone know if they do any kind of charity walk or anything for animal rights like the walk that they do for breast cancer? I wanted to get all my BM's together and do something like this but I am having a hard time finding out any info.

So maybe we should organize one ourselves! Seriously, we can pick an organization to do it for and set up our own 'walk in the park' or something. I did a 'dog walk for MS' last year and it was so much fun seeing all the dogs and my puppy had soooo much fun! All we need is sponsors!!!

I used to volunteer with Save-A-Pet in Port Jeff, but now im with Second Chance Rescue which is located in Luv-A-Pup's store in Farmingville. All animals in the store are rescues, surrenders or rehabbing wildlife.

Thanks for the info, I would love to do this with our BP, I think it would be and excuse for everyone to get together and it would go towards a good cause.
