Animal Shelters/Adopting

Original post by BMD'sPeanut

Can you just walk into a shelter and adopt on the spot? (Or at least hang out abd check out the pets?)

Anyone have any experiences with NSAL (or any other places?)

TIA.

If anyone wishes to adopt a great cat or kitten.
check out ACT

You could also try Little Shelter. We've never adopted from them, but have heard good things about them.

Re: Animal Shelters/Adopting

I found adopting from a private shelter to be quite annoying. I went to several different shelters looking for a dog. NSAL couldn't get in contact with my references while I was there so I couldn't adopt. I also went to the little shelter in Huntington and they wanted everyone in the household to come in including my Grandma who is 93. I understand that they don't want bad people to adopt their animals but if you are a good canidate it is really annoying.
I wound up finding my parents dog in a town Shelter. They don't give you the hassle of trying to adopt. She was a stray so we had to wait 10 days. Like most of the other dogs in shelters she had fleas, worms, kennel cough and was under weight. Now she is very happy, healthy and spoiled! She wasn't fixed so they had to fix her before we took her home.

ETA: Unlike NSAL and Little shelter most town shelters do euthanize animals so if you adopt from a town shelter you really are saving a life!
