Animal Shelters/Adopting

Animal Shelters/Adopting

Can you just walk into a shelter and adopt on the spot? (Or at least hang out abd check out the pets?)

Anyone have any experiences with NSAL (or any other places?)

TIA.

You usually cannot adopt on the spot but you definitely can check out and play with the dogs. I adopted my dog in North Carolina but we had to wait 3 days to get her because she was a stray and they give the owners 72 hours to claim her. No one claimed her and then we got to adopt her (after she wae neutered)

good luck, it is such a great thing to adopt an animal.

We adopted Larry David from NYCACC in Brooklyn. The only reason we couldn't take him home that day was because he still had to be neutered (they don't adopt out unfixed animals). We picked him up the next day. If you're dealing with a rescue group, the process is usually longer. NSAL you can definitely take home the same day if everything is in order (my best friend did). Just depends on the dog and also on the day of the week you go (if something needs to be done to or for the pet and the person who does it is not there, you have to wait).

You getting a puppy???

When I got my cat we had to wait a few days for him to get vet checked and chipped. I DO NOT recommend NSAL! DH's family got a dog there...They were told she was a female dog and would be max 20 lbs grown...Well HE is over 60 lbs and knocks me down! Another friend was given a dog with kidney failure..Though NS gave treatment, he died after less than a year and it was heartbreaking for the family.

Ick. Sorry about that Nov04LI...

Eogara: When your friend picked out the dog was that her first time there or did she go back a few times?

Re: Animal Shelters/Adopting

We just adopted a puppy at NSAL about two weeks ago. When adopting a crossbreed puppy from a shelter you need to be willing to accept the fact that the dog can grow to just about any size because there really is no way to predict how large a cross breed will get. You also have to be willing to deal with some standard puppy kennel illnesses. Most puppies that come into a shelter will have a cold, worms, ring worm or pink eye etc. Just ask a lot of questions and don't take the first one you see unless it is the right dog for your family. DH and I went to NSAL five times before we found our puppy. Good Luck and feel free to FM me if you have questions on NSAL since I just went through the experience.
My parents also adopted a 2 year old dog from NSAL about 11 years ago.

I would recommend NSAL. We got two dogs there. Grizzly who died two years ago at the age of 19 and my baby Tiffany who I had to put to sleep on Oct 1, (one week before my wedding ) at the age of 17 1/2. I miss her so much. I will probably be going back to NSAL over the weekend to get another dog. No dog can ever replace my Tiffy but this is the first time in my life I don't have a dog and I'm not coping with it so well.

We adopted a kitten from a shelter in Glen Cove last year and were able to bring her home that day. They asked us for references, called a few, checked with our vet and then asked for a check

We adopted from the ASPCA. We played with the kitties for about 4 hours, were interviewed and our references were checked and we were able to take her home that day.

We brought a letter from our landlord stating we could have a pet, references we knew would be home, ID and we were interviewed.

We had been thinking about adopting for a year though, and had really put a lot of thought into it. I saw them turn away other people and tell them they could come back in 48 hours to adopt. Sometimes the animal needs more care, sometimes they just want to be sure you aren't adopting on a whim.

Just don't bring your refernece people with you...I did that because I thought it would speed things along. At NSAL they said they have to CALL someone at home to talk to them. So we sent my mom out to the car with her cell phone...it was such a mess. But we eventually got to leave with our PITA cat!

We adopted our cat from Kent Animal Shelter. We couldn't bring her home the same day because she had to be fixed, but if she was, and they could get in touch with our references, then we could have taken her home that day.

we adopted at Save a Pet in Port Jeff. We were in and out in 45 minutes! It really was great! They did call a reference to confirm we had a fenced in yard. But when the first wasnt home, we gave them another number and that worked. We also had to fib a little and didnt tell them that we both work basically work from 9-6. We did tell thme that my DH would be coming home at lunch to let the dog out, which he did in the beginning. But if he did that now, it just upsets her schedule more than anythign else!

Good Luck, there is no better love and affection than what you get from a puppy!!!!!

It was Amanda, actually. they had gone once before they got married but this dog wasn't there. They decided then it wasn't the right time. Then, after petsitting larry david for a weekend, they knew they were up to the task

Her family actually had gotten their 2 dogs (that I know) from there as well. Rocky died at like 14-15 and Duke is about 10 and still going strong.

They have VERY few small dogs though, just in case that's what you're in the market for. You'll find a lot of rotties, german shepherds and lab mixes.
