I just overheard a discussion and am wondering what you all think.
If a friend told you that she never wanted to get married or have children, what would you think?

Re: Anonymous poll!
Some people are not meant to be married or have kids. I have a friend that fits that bill and she is very happy.

No - I dont think shes in denial. Marriage and kids are not for everyone. And I dont think anyone should be ashamed if they really feel that way.

I wouldn't think anything of it. Marriage and kids aren't for everyone.

I would think that is perfectly fine. Different strokes for different folks. If everyone was the same life would be boring!

You never know why people say the things they do. Maybe she's not able to have children, or was abused as a child, etc. There are lots of different reasons for someone saying something like that and I wouldn't assume to know what they might be.

I know a lot of people who don't want to get married or have children. . . it's not for everyone.

Honestly, I never wanted to have children before meeting FH. She may change her mind, she may not. That's what makes the world interesting--no one is exactly the same! :)

I'll respect his/her decision. Who am I to judge her/him.

Re: Anonymous poll!
That is a tough one! I think some people who say that are in total denial. On the other hand, not everyone is ment to get married and have kids. I guess it depends on the person and what is going on in their life at the time.

I feel the same, but for myself, I could not imagine never having children....the never being married I don't question as much....I know that is wierd, but....I always wanted kids!
I do want marriage too...I just want the kids more!

i wouldnt really think anything of it. to each his own...
i Do however think one of the worst things you can do is bring a child that you dont want into the world... its unfair, IMO and people shouldnt have kids just b/c its 'expected'.

Re: Anonymous poll!
I don't think there is anything wrong with that, nor do I think he/she should be judged for living life how he/she wants to live it.
FH and I both aren't sure if we want kids.
I have very strong beliefs in how children should be raised, and I don't know if I can or want to sacrifice my career, hobbies, volunteer work, ability to travel whenever we want, etc. to raise children how I feel they should be raised.
Don't get me wrong, I love kids-other people's kids, I just love the fact that I can give them back to their parents when the day is over. We have a dog who is our baby, and that's all we need for now.
I think that some people have kids just because they feel like it's the 'next step' or something they should do b/c that's what society dictates, not b/c they really want to, which I feel is part of the reason why our society is headed the way it is...I can go on and on about this topic, but I'll leave it at that.

Re: Anonymous poll!
I was one of those people until I met my SO! I always said I'd NEVER get married but that was because I never knew what it was like to be in a good relationship! Now, I can't imagine not wanting to spend my life with him
As for kids, both SO and I are still not sure. I have no maternal instinct, I just don't feel it and neither does he. I don't think it's fair to say that something is wrong with either one of us because we aren't pinning for children. We both think our lives will be extremely fulfilled even if we don't have kids.

I couldn't agree with you more! FH and I are still up in the air about children for the reasons you mentioned above...I've seen too many people have children when they really weren't ready and it is not a good situation for the parents or the child.

Us too.
Marriage and children are not for everyone, and I don't think it is odd not to want either one.
