I don't think there is anything wrong with that, nor do I think he/she should be judged for living life how he/she wants to live it.
FH and I both aren't sure if we want kids.
I have very strong beliefs in how children should be raised, and I don't know if I can or want to sacrifice my career, hobbies, volunteer work, ability to travel whenever we want, etc. to raise children how I feel they should be raised.
Don't get me wrong, I love kids-other people's kids, I just love the fact that I can give them back to their parents when the day is over. We have a dog who is our baby, and that's all we need for now.
I think that some people have kids just because they feel like it's the 'next step' or something they should do b/c that's what society dictates, not b/c they really want to, which I feel is part of the reason why our society is headed the way it is...I can go on and on about this topic, but I'll leave it at that.
I couldn't agree with you more! FH and I are still up in the air about children for the reasons you mentioned above...I've seen too many people have children when they really weren't ready and it is not a good situation for the parents or the child.
Us too.
Marriage and children are not for everyone, and I don't think it is odd not to want either one.

I agree completely. We can't wait to be married but have no plans for children. I have friends that wanted children more than marriage so have wonderful, solid relationships with their SO and child.

Re: Anonymous poll!
i think that not having children and getting married is a mature conclusion that some people reach. i have a FSIL who never had kids and an aunt. nothing wrong with them and they would make great mothers, just wasn't for them.

You never know why people say the things they do. Maybe she's not able to have children, or was abused as a child, etc. There are lots of different reasons for someone saying something like that and I wouldn't assume to know what they might be.
Very well said, we have no idea of her personal situation.
I have complete respect for someone who can acknowledge and admit something like that as opposed to a woman who is REALLY in denial and thinks that they are 'supposed' to get married and have kids (even though they don't want to) and completely destroys other lives when they become bitter, hostile, resentful and abusive of her family.

Re: Anonymous poll!
why would there be something wrong with someone who doesn't want to get married or have children?

I don't think there is anything wrong with someone not wanting to be married or have children. People have different feelings and priorities in life, and no one is right or wrong when it comes to choosing their love and parental path in life.

Re: Anonymous poll!
I've come in contact with women who swear they will never get married and have children...but then they find mr. right and their entire tune changes.
On the other hand, I have come in contact with women who really just don't want marriage/children.
Although that is not my cup of tea...to each is own!

I don't think there is anything 'wrong' with her at all.
Honestly, I never thought I'd get married (go figure).
FH and I talked about children very early in our relationship and decided that we didn't want to have any. We've been together for over 8 years, and I have never regretted our decision.
FH and I are in position where having children is basically impossible (not because of medical reasons).
There are a lot of people that have children that shouldn't. I know that it is not true in all cases, but I've known people who had children merely because they were 'expected' to.
We made the decision that was best for us. As long as your friend is comfortable and happy in her decision, it shouldn't be for any of us to judge her.

Re: Anonymous poll!
Some people who say that are in denial, but that is usually younger girls who say that. Older (when I say this I mean late 20s or older) may just not be into that lifestyle, and that is fine

To each his own...marriage and children are not for everyone.
Ditto! And I actually respect people that are smart enough to know this, as opposed to those who bring babies in the world to suffer.

You don't know how much I admire the woman who sits next to me at work. She's 65, doesn't look a day over 50, is in great health and fulfilled outside of work. She has no regrets over never marrying nor having children. It's not for everyone.

Re: Anonymous poll!
I guess it depends on the context of the conversation. I was visiting with a client and reviewing benefits and their costs for single, single plus one, and family.
One of the employees was obsessing about 'where's the cost for people who don't have a kid or a spouse?' The cost was clearly right in front of her, but she just KEPT asking and sounded REALLY obnoxious about it.
So, of course, I thought to myself, 'WOW, someone is REALLY bitter!!!'
