we did but they appraised for way higher then he actually paid for. but he also has a good relationship w them. ive heard to get it appraised elsewhere also

This was the same for me too. It was just easier that way for us.

I got mine appraised at Macy's in Herald Square. (My ring was not purchased there).
I did this in January, and I think the price breakdown was as follows:
Flat fee of $25.
For every hundred dollars appriased higher than $2500, it's an extra dollar.
ie., a ring appraised for $2800 would come with an appraisal fee of $28; a ring appraised for $8600 would come with an appraisal fee of $86.
Bonus: You can browse in the bridal salon afterwards and then play 'I want this on the registry' in their home department too!
