Another Name change question...

Hi girls...

I have been lazy about changing my name on my drivers license and SS card.
Just realized I need to do my license ASAP b/c DH and I are going away in 4 weeks and i booked my plane ticket in my new married name thinking I would absolutely have changed my name by then.

So 1st question is once I go take care of business at DMV - how long does it take to get the license in the mail? Please tell me 4 weeks!

Also - does it matter if I go to DMV or SS first? I was reading what documents and proof of identity I need for SS and it said I need a drivers license with my OLD name and marriage certif. So if I go to DMV first - don't they take my old license with old name from me???

I went to DMV - showed them the marriage certificate, they gave me a new temporary PAPER license and my old license back as a form of ID.
This should be acceptable for any flight, providing you are not going out of the US. It took my new license about 3-4 weeks to arrive.

I then went and drove to SS in Patchogue, waited 45 minutes, gave them my original marriage certificate and old SS card - they mailed me back the original marriage certificate and new card within 10-14 business days.

The DMV should send you a new license in about 2 weeks, I think they say 7-10 business days. I would go in and do it ASAP tho just to save yourself the stress.

You can do DMV and SS the same day, doesn't matter which you do first.

The amount of time it takes to get a new license depends... I got a new one last year when I moved to NY from NJ and it took like 10 days at most. This time, when I changed my name, it took three weeks.

Like the above poster said, you do get your old license back and the paper copy of the new one so you should be ok!

Oh great...thanks girls. I didn't realize I'd get to keep the old license as proof...that is good to hear b/c I am sure I'll need photo ID. Just flying in the US so should be fine.
