Does it matter if the guys name goes first? or womans?

I think the womens name always goes first.

Typically the ladies name goes first.

In the case of a couple, it should read Mr. & Mrs. John Doe not Mrs. & Mr. John Doe.

Mr. and Mrs John Doe

or

Ms. Jane Doe
Mr. John Smith

correct? even if the male is the guest of my cousin or something?

I've always heard that the woman's name goes first. But then, on another website, they were talking about etiquette and it said that it should go alphabetically. Has anyone else heard that?

And FH and I have received invitations where his name was first (which is correct alphabetically) and others where my name is first (which is correct if the woman's name is first) so now I am confused.

The following website helped me address my invitations. Maybe it can help you with the placecards. I would think you would follow the same pattern.
