Do you think that it is equally offensive to call someone 'fat' and 'skinny'? Is one 'worse' than the other?

Re: Another Q of the D
I think it is equally bad..I know many women that would love to put on weight and no matter what they do or eat, they're incapable of being heavier and I know that it's truly a sensitive issue for those women just as being overweight is for heavier women...
I know society still tends to be in favor of really thin women over overweight women, but I think that's slowly changing, people are starting to notice and admire curvier women and that is making it that much harder for thin women to be thin and comfortable...
So I think it's equally bad...

I think that, honestly, they do not. I would wager that 99% of the time if someone were to call someone 'too skinny' part of it is out of envy... but if someone is called 'fat' it is definitely NOT out of jealousy, but out of real contempt for how the person looks...

I think either one is rude and uncalled for, one is not worse than the other.

I see what you're saying, but I think it would be equally offensive to the ppl being called fat or skinny.

I agree - while I've never been called 'too skinny', I would imagine that its offensive too. Some people have trouble gaining weight and are probably self conscious if they too skinny.
Both are offensive

I think it is.. I've only been called fat in my life... one day i would love to hear that i am skinny But.. I think they are both equally bad when said in negative connotation. For example, if someone was to say that I lost weight and I was now skinny, I would be estatic. On the other hand if it continued and said I was too skinny, that I looked sick.. than yeah.. thats bad.. shut the he ll up then.

Yes i do actually..... i have had people tell me I am too skinny and i take offense to that.... it is not a compliment, I can not say 'thank you' after they say that to me.

Both can be offensive. It all depends on the context in which they are used.

I agree with this. I also think its a lot easier for someone to come up to someone and say 'wow youre skinny' than say 'Wow you are fat!'

I don't think it would necessarily be out of jealousy..the majority of the people I know truly prefer being curvy over being thin...and they definitely don't aspire to be model-thin...they actually look down on it and they don't think it's attractive at all... and I think more and more people have that same viewpoint nowadays...so a lot of times, it really is out of contempt

I agree with both of these points !
I think i am the only person who loved being called too skinny when i was thin. I hope to be called too skinny again, but then again, i used to be heavy , now chubby

Re: Another Q of the D
yes both are offensive and rude. If someone says youre skinny in a good way then that is different though. But if someone says OH WOW you are TOO skinny then that is also rude. Weight is such a sensitive issue with almost everybody so to say either or might just upset the person. But at times being called skinny it can be said in a positive way. Such as oh you are skinny and look good you dont need to lose weight, if i said that to somebody then i mean it in a good way. If i say 'ugh you are getting too skinny ' then that is wrong and im insulting the person. Some girls like to be called skinny though bc it is their goal so i guess it depends on how its said

i totally agree. I think no matter what people say they would rather be called skinny than fat {i know I would} so i don't think they're equally offensive though different people find each one offensive

Re: Another Q of the D
for thin girls - (im not speaking from experience that's for sure) i would tend to think it's the context that it's being brought across would determine if it's offensvie or not. there's playful joking and then there is just being rude
now on the fat comment side of it - how could any comments possibly be good??? and just like someone posted about how a super thin girl may be dying to put on weight but just can't, think about it from the other side as well. i personally was on steroids for the longest time and gained quite a bit of weight - you gonna make fun of me for that and expect me not to be offended? but the other weight i gained b/c of drinking and eating - well that's my fault. but still you don't shove it in someones face. that's my opinion

Re: Another Q of the D
I don't think they are equally offensive. Then again, I have a poor self image, and I can admit that. When I was younger people would comment on how skinny I was all the time, and I took that as a compliment. If someone calls me fat, I never take that as a compliment.
Saying someone is TOO skinny or TOO fat, well, that's different. Saying someone is 'too' anything, well that is usually an insult.
The simple use of the adjective though, well, I don't think one of them is even an insult.
That's just my POV though, coming from a fat girl who used to be skinny.
