I am being interviewed next week for a teaching job but the district has no union. What would be the positives and negatives of that? TIA What does the union do?

If your school doesn't have a union a positive would be that you don't have to pay union dues. However, the union's purpose is to fight for the teachers. So if an administrator treats you unfairly you really won't have anybody to go to for help. Unless this school has something similar to this but doesn't call it a union. If it is the only job you get this year take it for the steady pay check but I would recommend finding a school that has a union. Is this a catholic or private school?

Oh yeah that's a good point. If it's called Union Free it still has a union. For some reason school districts are calling themselves union free. lol confusing I know

the whole union free thing means it is a union school and a free school. i always thought that it meant there was no union until somene recently clarified this for me.

I always though NY was represented by the UFT I work in NJ so I am a NEA member. I would most likely not work in a school without a union, they are there to protect you and make sure your rights are not trampled! If this is all you can get now so be it but I would continue to look for another school district that has a union. XOXOXO Kitty

Re: Another question for teachers...
Union free actually has nothing to do with unions... i asked my union president. it has to do with the number of schools that belong to the town wherer the school district resides. it still confuses me but oh well. if i were you, i wouldnt work for a school if it does not have a union, yet i have never heard of a LI public school not having a union. If it is union free school district- that def doesnt mean they dont have a union. good luck!!! getting a new job is so exciting.

Re: Another question for teachers...
It's actually in North Carolina. They don't have unions.....
I would never work for a school or district without a union...though I dont believe there are any. Teachers are just like any other employees and need legal protection during questionable practices.
