Another registry-related question: Stainless steel or nonstick?

Another registry-related question: Stainless steel or nonstick?

I have been reading tons of old posts and I STILL don't know what to register for!

I hear get a set of stainless steel and then add some non-stick.

But what's the purpose of stainless steel? Can't I just go with all non-stick? I'm not a chef by any means...so I don't know how much it will matter.

Should I go a little more budget with the Emeril set? Or go with Calphalon or All-Clad?

Ugh I HATE THIS!

Calphalon all the way baby!!! they're non-stick so its less chance of burning. i cook a lot and i would never trust myself with out non-stick.

I got the Calphalon Stainless Steel set. It's the best to cook on, will last forever also. I did register for a few non-stick pieces to make eggs and things like that.

My FH is a Chef and owns his own place, so he is all about the Stainless Steel

I got calphalon but the non-stick set. I do hear that the stainless steel is better, but I am a novice cook so I don't really want to burn everything I cook, lol. So I registered for the nonstick and added one stainless calphalon pot.

i think it's best to mix it up a little if you and FH plan to cook a lot - some things just turn out better in stainless. but i've had some disasters with it too!

I also registered for Calphalon stainless steel......FMIL says that she 'always buys the pots & pans' (FH is the 5th to get married out of her 7 kids, so I guess this is some kind of tradition ....so this is one thing I would never ever hear the end of if we registered for an entire set of non-stick (but if I do just a few pieces I can get away with it!!

FSIL registered for Emeril's stainless steel set, and she said she wishes that she would've went with Calphalon or All Clad, b/c Emeril's pots are so heavy (I guess they're a pain to wash). HTH!!

non stick doesn't last as long, even if it says it does. the surface begins to scratch off - even if it doesn't happen until years down the road stainless steel lasts forever. plus, depending on the kind you get it's not good for you. teflon is poisonous (do NOT use, esp. if you have birds - it'll kill them if you burn something). it makes me wary of non stick in general. i don't really trust it.

of course the best is copper - but who can afford that? =0P

Re: Another registry-related question: Stainless steel or nonstick?

I'm really into cooking.... and spent a lot on a good set of pots.... (without regrets).

Hands down, all clad (basic stainless with an aluminum core, without nonstick) is the best. Stainless outside and inside is important because it's non reactive metal. Therefore acidic foods like tomatoes don't pick-up the metalic flavor of the pots... Anodized aluminum stains, while better than regular aluminum, is still somewhat reactive, and stains easily. The aluminum core makes the pots distribute heat more evenly than stainless steel alone.....

OK, so that's why stainless steel with an aluminum core is best.... now for why no teflon.
It's known for years that teflon enters the food. A medical report has shown that all americans tested had teflon in their blood Also, ALL nostick cookware loses its nostick surface over a period of 5 years or so.... even the good ones. So it's a waste to pay a lot for pots that won't last more than a decade....

For nonstick frying, good old cast iorn! It's a bit heavy, but once seasoned, it's more nonstick than teflon.... and unlike teflon, it will last 50 years!

forgot about the birds and the teflon degassing above 500 degrees.... another yikes....

copper is great to cook in, but its also pretty high maintenance becuase it stains so easily, and it too is fairly reactive with acidic foods...

can't beat a copper bowl for whipping up egg whites, though!

I currently use Cuisinart Non Stick Set...i love them...they weren't too expensive and get the job done. There were other areas that I wanted to splurge on for the kitchen. They are awesome to cook with and they are the absolute easiest things to clean, its like i think they should be clean and then they are. It doesn't matter what I cook or how gross they look before going in the sink, they are clean with the least amount of effort ever.
