Another registry-related question: Stainless steel or nonstick?

Original post by GettinHutched

I have been reading tons of old posts and I STILL don't know what to register for!

I hear get a set of stainless steel and then add some non-stick.

But what's the purpose of stainless steel? Can't I just go with all non-stick? I'm not a chef by any means...so I don't know how much it will matter.

Should I go a little more budget with the Emeril set? Or go with Calphalon or All-Clad?

Ugh I HATE THIS!

I went with the Emeril stainless steel set and then I added a few non-stick pieces. I originally wanted to register for All-Clad, but couldn't justify registering for $800 worth of pots and pans. The Emeril set is actually made by All-Clad and figured I couldn't go wrong.

we registered for stainless... the nonstick coating wears off too quickly... besides caphalon is expensive why do you want to have to buy two sets??

ah sis, good to know we've got something else in common. FW and I have NO IDEA what to do about this stuff. I've heard no teflon... i think we're going to aim for the all clad, one or two on stick for eggs, and a couple cast iron (for good measure). The other things that's problematic for us is our house will be kosher, so we've got to do this TWICE!

I registed for Caphalon stainless steel. My old roommate had a Wolfgang Puck stainless steel pan that we used constantly. I LOVED it! I am throwing in 2 non-stick pans.
Most chefs only cook with stainless steel. Plus some non-stick surfaces are hazardous when heated. Like Teflon. Be Careful!!

Thank you all so much for your comments.

But why am I still so unsure? What the heck is wrong with me? I'm definitely not a pro-cook. Should I just go with non-stick mostly and get a few stainless pots or something? I get different comments from different people (including friends outside this site) and I'm still completely lost!

Thanks all!

k i've had tfal teflon non stick for 5 yrs...loved how easy they were to clean, but the outside (black enamel) scratched and stained from the dishwasher detergent...i registered for emeril's stainless and its been a rough transition b/c i forgot that eggs in a metal pan are a NO NO - so far, they cook well. it's hard to fully convert, i kept a big tfal and a small tfal along with my emeril. love the stainless for frying potatoes (fries) n love the stainless for boiling...so far i like them both but wary of the teflon so im figuring out the kinks in the stainless. not bad though....

Same here. Took me a while to get used to cooking with new stainless steel pots. My moms have been broken in for 20 years and still cook amazing, and look new.
I burned my first meal of two..lol.

I got one non stick pan for cooking eggs. .any secret to not getting eggs to stick to stainless steel pan? I tried so many sprays, etc.

I got the Calphalon Stainless Steel set. It's the best to cook on, will last forever also. I did register for a few non-stick pieces to make eggs and things like that.

My FH is a Chef and owns his own place, so he is all about the Stainless Steel

Same here...I got stainless but got a few nonstick pieces as well

ditto
