Another teaching question!

I am deisgning my test for class..how long on an average, should a test be for 4th grade students? Would they be given a full hour for multiple choice, matching, short answer questions??? I am clueless and appreciate any help that anyone can give! I need this info for grad school! Thanks a bunch!

Re: Another teaching question!

oh, i never thought about test length. i usually do short answer questions and an essay for ss. for math, also short answer. tests can take anywhere from 20-45 minutes. i want them to have various tests so they are ready for state tests. you don't want to overwhelm them. but you want the test to be complete with what they have studied. i wouldn't give an hour long test on a regular basis, but more as a unit test at the end of a semester but even in 4th grade, that seems like a lot.

Re: Another teaching question!

Fourth graders take state tests that can be as long as an hour and a half, so 45 minutes shouldn't be a problem. That is the allotted time for their math and reading tests (multiple choice section).

Re: Another teaching question!

when i was doing my student teaching, my cooperating teacher always suggested taking the test myself, and time it. She estimated that it would take the students 4 times as long to take the test...but that was for middle and high schoolers....you might want to do it by 5 or 6 times for younger kids

Re: Another teaching question!

Great..thanks!!! Ill try that..all thoough I know the info inside and out, so it would take me a few seconds to take the test. I think 40-45 should be sufficient. Its not for real, buts its for a grade fro grad school
