Another tipping post -- sorry

Ok - ive been reading so many different tipping posts, articles and lists and im more confused than when i started

I found that article on LIW site and these two i found on another site:

All about tipping
Tipping Etiquette

They say that wedding professionals, like phot/video are generally not tipped. The one article says not to tip the waiters and captains - that the Maitre D tip is for all that

Im confused b/c i see alot of people posting that they are tipping owners, photographers, waiters etc

I know in the end its a choice by the consumer to tip - and thier choice whom to tip and how much -- but i feel like i want to 'do the right thing'

Anyone else struggling with this topic???

The articles says: 'Wedding professionals, from bridal consultants to photographes, generally are not tipped'

Not b/c their owners

I dont even think i totally understand what it means Because it goes on to say that 'Actual service providers' get tipped

So whats the difference between a 'wedding professional' and a 'service provider'

well i personally dont agree with that and wouldnt feel comfortable doing that. I am tipping everybody what i feel like tipping them. Sometimes its good to get a guideline such as $3-5 per guest for the maitr'd but other than that i basically know what ill tip people.

I couldnt imagine not tipping photographer, bridal consultant, dj and all those people.

i understand the article says that, but not like if you tip a photographer, dj and so on, like youre doing a bad thing. Not like they'll turn around and say 'OH NO im not supposed to get tipped'

I am with you... I feel very confused about who to tip and how much as well. I know you basically tip everyone that does make direct profit from your business. That is why you do not generally tip the owners if they are doing your day... ie. dj/photog. But I dont see handing the person that is working with them money and not them. I am thinking I will make an envelop saying (dj's, photographer..etc.) and let them sort out who gets how much.
idk.. still really confused. Tipping adds so much to the cost of the wedding! AHH!

I guess what im trying to understand - is why people are tipping their vendors - what is the reason behind the tip. I understand tipping someone who goes above and beyond - but i feel like people are tipping everyone just to tip them.

Thanks! I think that's a reasonable starting point.

i honestly have issues with the whole tipping thing. my family things fh and i are nuts to tip the dj/video/photog they understand the limo and the md and bridal attendant.

FH said we will have envelopes on hand for everyone but since the tip is on the service we receive that day we will consider how they act/worked that day. If things go wrong the tip will be adjusted and if things go better we have some extra cash to throw in.

So far the only one getting a big tip in our minds is our md at the catering hall - everyone else is a basic tip of what most guidelines say.

It says it is optional if its an owner, but i dont see where it says not to tip.

Im most likely giving each photo/video person $50 or more, $100 to bridal attendant, $50 each dj/mc..or more depending on service of course

i think its based on service like everything else you wuold tip for.

what i dont get is how you tip the flower delivery guy when you dont see him (we are just getting flowers delivered to the RH, not the house
