Another 'what does/will your child call' question : )
Original post by JennRenee
My mom doesn't want to be called Grandma, or anything that sounds like it. My own grandmother is 'Nana' so she doesn't want that, and Patrick's mom is 'Nanny' to his nieces and nephew, so that's out. Any idea as to what the Lima can call her??

Oh Jen, this has been a 'discussion' between me and Joe because I don't want this kid to have fifty million 'nannys'. Joe calls his one grandmother 'Nanny' and the other 'Mama'. My nephew calls my mother 'Nanny' and my father 'Papa', so I want our baby to call Joe's mother 'Nonna' and his father 'Nonno', because I'm sure his father's wife will be called 'Grandma' (plus, like your mother, Joe's mother doesn't want to be called that) and his mother's husband will be 'Grandpa'. Problem solved, right? NOPE. Joe says 'why can't your mother be called Nonna' -- um, hello, my mother isn't Italian, she's Irish, so why would she be Nonna????
What's wrong with Nonna????? For short she can be called 'Nonni', which sounds like Nanny, no? I want each grandparent to have a distinguished name so that they know which one is which w/o the first names being involved, because I don't like that.
I'm just going to tell the baby 'Nonna' w/o anyone knowing and then when they start talking, I'll be like 'see'!!!!!

deb your post was like a confusing tongue twister, LOL. I LOVE reading your posts !! anyway, my nieces, since my sis AND her hubby are both italian. they call both nonna's 'NONNA.' since they see my mom ALOT more often, if you say 'lets go to nonna's house' they know its my mom, because she lives a few blocks away, they spend ALOT of time with her, whether to babysit, or just visit and go out. Their other nonna is in bklyn, and they see her maybe 3-4X a month, and when they go there, they come back and say 'nonna's cat is silly' talking about the other nonna. so it doesnt seem to confuse them, beleive it or not. i guess they are old enough to know by now. but if anything you can say 'nonna Lucia' or 'nonna ___first name___'
too funny that joe said to call your mom nonna and shes irish ! LOLLLLLLL NONNI, is grandparents PLURAL, tell him not to confuse baby cub ! LOL

LOL My mother is Nanny and DH's mother is Nana.
My nephew lives in Atlanta and when he says something about his Nanny, all the kids assume he's rich and has a live in. They dont call grandmothers Nanny there I guess.
When that same nephew was born, MY grandparents were still alive and we called them Nanny & PopPop so my Mom was trying to think of something for my nephew to call them. She started him with 'Mochiu'tê' (pronounced Ma-chut-e - Lithuanian for grandmother) and PopPop for my grandfather. My little nephew could never say either of them, he was so small, he called them Chut-e and HaHa. So we always called them that after that. We just never knew how to spell Chut-e. My SIL once spelled it Chute on a card. Remember the board game Chutes & Ladders? After that we all called the game 'Chut-e's' and Ladders. HaHa - I guess it's one of those funny family things that probably only the family members will find amusing.

I was reading the list of names and my personal favorite is Big Mama or Big Gram!1 I can just see my niece calling my mom...'hey Big Mama!!!!'
My Mom asked that she be called Gammie and my father is Poppie....but I really think I'm going to tell her that Big Mama sounds better!! My sister will get a kick out of that!!
