Anxiety Medication

Original post by dannisayz

I've been in Lexapro for almost a year now. I feel great. I still have panic attacks from time-to-time, but they are only under extreme stress.

I was wondering if anyone else was on this medication or was at one point. I know I cannot take it if I decide to have children and FH and I wanted to start trying within the next 2 1/2 years. From what my doctor is saying, I'm going to be one of the few people that needs to stay on this medication for life. He has no answers for what I am going to do while pregnant though.

I was hoping someone else might have an answer.

Re: Anxiety Medication

I was on Lexapro. I actually felt OK ( no panica attacks), but it made me somewhat depressed. The major drawback was the fact that I was gaining weight , and I hated it. I got off it and trying to manage my life w/o it. As far as prego, I also thought about it. I have no choice: my DH ( who is a Dr) will never let me be on any antidepressant while prego. On the other hand, I am VERY scared as I am pretty sure that panic attacks will return with vegeance ( I start getting them when I start thinking about pregnancy ). I have heard that there ob gyns who specialize in leading pregnancies for women who are on antidepressants. I do not even want to think about it now, but I think that if it comes down to it, the choice is clear: what's causing less pain to the baby: a mother who is stressed out or a medication? Go figure

Celexa and Lexapro is the same thing. I believe Lexapro is a newer version

Re: Anxiety Medication

I was on Lexapro for a short period of time. I didnt like how it made me feel. I can't really help you with the pregnancy issue but I can tell you to be careful when you (if you) stop taking it. I had withdrawl symptoms for a couple of weeks.

Re: Anxiety Medication

Thank you ladies for all you help. I'm going to see my MD next week to talk to him about my weight issues and the medication. I spoke with the Nurse Practitioner over the phone for about 30min today and she understands where I'm coming from. Basically, the biggest recommendation is for me to return to my therapist.

I've been against going back because going never seemed to really help me with my issues or for what triggers these attacks. I'm very well aware of what they are (my mother, my ex-boyfriend who was abusive, my grandmother's death, etc). There is only one factor of these triggers which is no longer in my life and that is my ex. I haven't seen him in 5 years and unless he moves back to NY, I will never see him again.

I guess what bothers me the most is that I desperately want normalcy. When the doctor and my therapist told me that the likelihood of me ever being without medication is very small (because I self-mutilate), I became very upset. I get constant aggravation from my mother about being on meds (she doesn't know she's one of the reasons I have to take them) and she constantly berates me about the weight I've gained since taking them. It's almost as if I'm damned if I do, damned if I don't. There is no escape.

I want to be without the demons in my head. I want to look how I did 5 years ago. I want to be happy with myself. I want to able to look into a mirror and not want to tear my skin off (I haven't since taking the meds, but I still think about it often). I want FH to understand he can't help me, but I love him anyway.

All day today I've thought about calling off the wedding because of how I feel. I'm starting to think it's a good idea.
