If anyone has any info to pass on about Block Island, I'll take it. To rent a bike/moped or walk? A whole day there or just a few hours? Restaurants? you know the drill.
Thank you.

Re: Any Block Island Ladies?
I haven't been there in years!!! We sailed from Greenport and got stuck there for Hurricane Betty (so how many years ago was that???). Let's just say, it was INSANE rocking and rolling on a mooring on a 40ft sailboat!!!
I still have a t-shirt from Dead Eye ****'s.

Re: Any Block Island Ladies?
I would rent bikes. I would not walk the island... although Ive done it before a bike is more practical. There is a restaurant called Ballards which has great views of the water its right by the Old Harbor. I would make it a whole day event. We go on our boat and spend about a week. I dont know if they have it still but there used to be a maze...

is the island 'flat' so bike riding is easy, or would mopeds be a fun option?

i went a while ago, maybe 5 years? we rented mopeds and it was a blast. they're really easy to use and you can cover a lot more ground, especially if you're not in the best shape. i'd make a whole day of it.

Re: Any Block Island Ladies?
We took the Ferry from Montauk there and rented bikes for 2 days... by the end of a second day on a bicycle, places I didn't know existed on me hurt, so we traded in for a moped.
I think it depends how good shape you are in... the bikes were fun, but so was the moped.

The restaurants we liked were: The Oar, Dead Eye Dicks and Harbor Grill.
I only have photos from The Oar:
I have no suggestions for moped vs bike vs walking since we had our SUV (we rented a house last year.)

There was a cute restaurant called the Oar that was great. Also the restaurant in the Hotel Manisses is great too! You could spend the whole day there if you go in the summer where you can swim too.

Re: Any Block Island Ladies?
We love Block Island and go for a long weekend every summer. Even got engaged there last summer
We prefer bikes to explore the island over mopeds, but both are fun. Bikes are a lot less expensive to rent if you don't mind providing your own pedal power.
For restaurants, for lunch I'd recommend The Oar -- laid back and fun on Old Harbor. For dinner, my pick would be Dead Eye ****'s. For an afternoon drink, grab a mudslide at Ballard's (It's usually quite a scene with live music) or at the porch at the National Hotel. For a late night drink, Captain Nick's is fun - they always have good cover bands. For something more upscale, the Spring House has martini night with live music (on Wed or Thurs).

Are there hotels there so you can stay overnight? It sounds like a great long weekend trip!

Yes there are hotels and no, the island isnt flat... its not a bad bike ride though... nothing like HUGE hills just rolling ones.

The ferry from Montauk takes somewhere over two hours. It leaves once a day from Montauk and leaves BI once an afternoon. Ballards is a good place for dinner, right on the beach. You can also do shopping, parasailing, banana boating,horse-back trail riding and lots of great eating! The Spring House is a great restaurant, and there are some bars for nigh-time. We stay at Champlin's each year, bc we sail there. You can rent mopeds, bikes, or hoof it. We hoof it, but it depends on how much you enjpy walking. You can also always catch a cab (many locals who change their min-vans into cabs for the season). It's good trip.
