I am a licensed practical nurse for 6 years, and I am graduating with my Bachelor of Science in Nursing on May 18!! I am currently working in long term care/rehab, and doing my internship 3 days a week at a major Level I emergency room. I am getting married next July, because this year would be too much between finishing up school and studying for the boards. Anyone who has been through nursing school knows how stressful it is. I hardly have time (or money) for anything, but I am looking foward to starting a job in a field that I love. Are you a nurse bird? Any other nurses out there?

Re: Any bride/nurses out there????
So happy you guys responded... Congratulations on your graduation Imagin916 - your smart to have the wedding next year -just study for the boards. What specialty do you want to work in?
jpsgirl - I really admire you for becoming an NP and hope to achieve that one day - what is your specialty???
I am an RN and have been working on a Med/Surg floor for almost two years now in Manhattan. We recentyly went to flex time so I work 7pm to 7am - what hours do you work?? I find that I hardly see my FH and when I do, I'm really tired. I may change to day shift after we're married but that night differential is needed right now. I'm also looking into some per diem right now for the wedding - it's this October....
Where are your weddings???

Re: Any bride/nurses out there????
I am having my wedding at the Riviera in Massapequa. As far as the area I want to work in is without a doubt the ED. I love it there, I love the fast pace, the different stuff every day that I see, and the teamwork between the nurses. I also like the ICU, but sometimes I just cant sit there for 12 hours! I am doing 25 hours a week in the ED for my internship, and I love it. I do 7-3 shifts in the ED, but I would like to work 12 hour shifts when I graduate. My FH lives in Pennsylvania, so I hardly get to see him anyway, but he understands how demanding school is, and he wants me to do well in school. JPSGIRL that is awesome that you are an NP! What specialty is your NP in? I want to wait a few years before I go back for mine, because I think the experience is needed before I can do that. Bird, I dont know how you do it! Working med/surg is hard work! You get so many patients, and have no time to even take a lunch. Good luck to both of you and I hope we can keep in touch.

I am a Registered Nurse as well. However, I now work as a Nurse Recruiter for a 395 bed hospital in Delaware and love it! It is such a challenge to find nurses who want to work as I did for 8 years. I am happy to hear there are still some nurses out there doing LTC and med/surg nursing. It seems as though no one wants to pay their dues and start out in these areas anymore. I applaud you!

My mother is a nurse too. I'm not but I am responding to this because I can totally sympathize with the pressures of school and exams! Believe me!
I am an attorney, and my original wedding date was May of 2002. Well, I had to cancel that, because I was graduating law school that month, and then went right into studying for the BAR exam. I passed (yay!), now we are getting married in December of this year. Bottom line, it all worked out, but it was extremely stressful when I was in school to even try to plan a wedding.

Re: Any bride/nurses out there????
I am glad to be in touch with other nurses! Isnt it amazing how many different opportunities we have as nurses? One in radiology, one a nurse recruiter, an NP, med/surg nurse, that is great! Kathy 116, although you are not a nurse I definitly think you have room to complain about studying!! Atlas you are right about many nurses not wanting to start out in med surg anymore. I wound up in LTC mainly due to the fact that very few hospitals will hire LPN's in NY, and also because I work for a nursing agency and I can make my own hours. I could not work for a hospital and be on a set schedule due to my crazy school schedule that often changes. From what I have been hearing from the nurse recruiters that come to my school to speak to students. they are hiring new grads into specialty areas that never before hired new grads. Even certain ED's are hiring new grads, and that was considered one of the only places in the last few years that wouldnt hire new nurses. I would not give up my LTC experience for anything. I am better able to assess the elderly patient and meet thier needs while they are in the hospital. Sorry to rant on for so long, but you know how it goes..Keep in touch all!

Re: Any bride/nurses out there????
I just started nursing school last semester. I decided to make a life change after I got married so being back at school full-time has been a big adjustment.
I'm not sure what area I want to go into so I'd love to hear your stories. School so far is hard but I know it will be worth it in the end.

Re: Any bride/nurses out there????
I am an RN I graduated May 2001. I am currently working on a Stroke Recovery Unit and we also do CAPD for those pt's that need it. We have 37 beds, very busy, and short staffed. I work the flex hours too of 7pm - 7:30am. I actually just got home and was happy to see this post. I love being a nurse, it really makes me feel good when I know I have made a change in someone's life. May it be for the better of their health, or letting them pass to the next stage in life. I do have a new position awaiting me on Ortho, but haven't moved down to that unit yet, because we are so short staffed. For now, they need me to remain where I am , but my spot is being held. I just needed a change of pace, seeing something new. Ortho will be more of a Surgical experience for me. After doing that for a year or two, who knows what I will up for next. I am always up for the challenge. Happy to see other nurses out there, just like me. Good luck to you all in our profession and wedding planning. OH, by the way..I am having my reception at the Riviera in Massapequa as well. ~Anne

Re: Any bride/nurses out there????
My NP is in family health, but I pretty much just work with adults.....it's a frustrating position, because they want to pay us like nurses, even though we have our masters and can write prescriptions...., all in all it's pretty cool though!

Re: Any bride/nurses out there????
I am so happy to hear from all of you - you all sound like graet nurses. Yes med/surg is hard and my hospital is now having budget problems so they have been not so much laying off but no perdiems are being hired - the other night we had four nurses and one PCA for 34 patients!!! Crazy. I applaud those who are starting or are in school and commend those who are still working.
By the way, I'm having ny wedding at the Chateau Briand in October and have almost everything booked except the limos, my shoes and veil - any suggestions.....

Re: Any bride/nurses out there????
I'm a Nurses assistant going school full time trying to graduate early and planning wedding. Nobody realizes how hard nursing school is if they haven't been through it. And to top it all off planning a wedding, I don't know how I managed it but I some how have gotten through it almost. Less then 3 months to go and I'm still alive. I give all you girls credit that you have managed to pull it off also. Soon I'll be able to relax in the Bahamas

Re: Any bride/nurses out there????
Hello-another registered nurse here. I work on a med-surg floor but have also worked ICU/CCU and telemetry. I prefer med-surg because it's such a busy atmosphere. I graduated in 1999 from SUNY Brockport and it was definately a tough program-I never would have been able to go through nursing school while planning a wedding-talk about stress!! Anyway, good luck to all thos pursuing a career

Re: Any bride/nurses out there????
Going to nursing school and planning a wedding - you guys are amazing. You're right - people don't know how hard it is in schoool.
Being a nurse is the only job which can exhaust you mentally, educationally it tests your knowledge, your response to emergency situations, physically with lifting and moving patients, skills, prioritization and spiritually. You also have to be able to deal with all the interns/residents and find out who is covering who (yes I'm in a teaching hospital). But you will be amazed at how much you learn and how it affects the rest of your life.
My FH just told me how he cannot believe how much I have gotten done with the wedding and says it's because of me being a nurse that I can handle so many things at once. I think it's an amazing profession and sorry for rambling on but I fell this needed to be said....By the way, when is everyone's wedding and for those who are already married, any pics???

Re: Any bride/nurses out there????
DaniRN- Hi, just wanted to comment that 'I' too went to SUNY Brockport for my nursing degree. I started here on the island at Stony Brook, but then for my last two yrs applied for the program at Brockport and love it. I just needed that 'whole' going away to college experience and that is where I landed. So cool, I am sure we had many of the same professors and experiences. I graduated May 2001.

Re: Any bride/nurses out there????
Nursing school really can kick your butt, nursing school AND planning a wedding?!? You have my admiration ( and sympathy!). I give you alot of credit. It really is an amazing profession, and like someone else said, it will change all aspects of your life, teach you how to make priorities, handle stress, and multi-task like a pro! There are tremendous opportunities in nursing, as you can see from all the different areas we work in. Nursing school is so hard, and there's the reality shock after graduation as well.... Let us know if we can help! Bird - what hospital do you work at? I'm at SBUH - there's nothing like the teaching hospital experience!

Re: Any bride/nurses out there????
I work at Mt. Sinai hospital on the upper East Side in Manhattan. I graduated from Molloy College in January 2001. Before that I went to Hofstra University with a BA in psychology (had no idea what I wanted to be at the time). So yes I have two undergraduate degrees - a BA and a BSN. And I'm also thinking of going back to school to become a nurse anesthetist!!!! - I know I'm crazy but thank goodness for my FH who supports me 100% and is willing to work while I go to school full time because it's a program that they say is so hard that you cannot work while doing it. But the salary is worth it....
