Any FDNY wives/fiances/girflfriends??? Please come in.

OK, so DH got his acceptance letter for the FDNY on Saturday. He starts the Academy on the 26th.

How do you guys cope with your SO being a fireman? I know it has its positives and negatives but I can't get over the fact that he will be running into burning buildings...

Any advice?

It's really hard at first I didn't sleep AT ALL when he wasn't home. I still don't when he works a 24. But now I think I am adjusting a little better and I am confident that he will make the right decisions.

when my FH first started the academy I was soo scared, he had taken the test a long time ago before 9/11 with his friend and his friend got in first, then when we graduated college he was looking for a job, couldnt find anything, and then one day the fire department called and said that he was accepted, academy starts next week, your in. I was like WAIT what?? when he was assigned to the truck I cried my eyes out for days, I was sooo scared but then I realized that he was meant to do this job.. I have never been so proud of him. My family is proud of him, and my friends are amazed at his courage and bravery. You are lucky and we are all lucky to have these men in our lives. I know that sometimes it doesnt seem like it even matters to them, but you know that deep down inside those tough men, they need us to be there for them, they need us to just stand next to them and hold them up. sorry this is so long, but I really needed to get this out, and we all need to thank g8d every day that we have these guys in our lives

My FI is FDNY too. Feel free to FM me anytime if you need support. When I found out that he had been accepted, I did cry and feel worried. When he was in the academy, it was difficult because they would make him so tired he had no energy for anything else. When he came home, he would have to study.. But things get a lot better. I was able to accept the idea that this is what our life is going to be. What a great organization the FDNY is. I've never met a more wonderful and giving group of people. I don't really have anything negative to say about it other than maybe the danger involved but I think in terms that anyone could die at any time. I know he was put on this earth to be a hero and he wouldn't be happy doing anything else. I feel that all of the firemen are heros.

That's how DH felt in the academy too... Not with 1 week to graduation we both feel that a HUGE weight has been lifted off of our shoulders. Now we are ready for the next step his fire house!

It's so exciting when they find out which house they are assigned to. They give them a wish list of about 6 choices, if I remember correctly? Then, they have to go there and usually the senior guys will throw water on them or something.

Let me know what firehouses they get into. My DH has worked everywhere. Back in the day they had to do rotations.

My FH is a cop and a volunteer FF.

From my experience, the academy was the worst but also the best experience we've been through. It was hard, not only for him, but for his loved ones. But it brought us so much closer. For me, it was the time that made us cross over from 'dating' to 'getting ready to get engaged/married'

In terms of the danger of the job(s): As a volunteer, of course he sees less action... but as the daughter of a Firefighter and Cop (I'm marrying my father practically!)... I've come to terms with the danger.

In my eyes, they are well prepared, well trained and have a great group of people supporting them in any situation.

Congrats to YOU for getting through the academy, too!
