Any HINDU brides out there??

My new husband is Hindu and his parents are planning a second wedding for us. I need to go buy an outfit - they suggested I don't get a sari.

Any shops on LI?? I prefer not to go to Queens if there are shops on LI I can try first.

Thanks

My FH is Indian. You can get Sari's in Jackson Heights. There are a lot of places to choose from.

You can also try New Hyde Park, but they tend to be more expensive.

There are a lot of stores in 'Little India' -- Rt. 106/107 in Hicksville, south of Old Country Rd. and north of Hempstead Tpke.

I've never been, but I've seen them there!

Is this a typo or did you really mean that your FHs parents don't want you to get a Sari?

His mom did say NOT to get a sari - she said it is tough to wear and I would be better off with something simpler.

Can you take FMIL with you? That might be helpful.

Re: Any HINDU brides out there??

hi!

I went to my friend's sister's Hindu wedding in New Delhi. I'm not Indian but the family bought me a sari to wear at the ceremony -- and lent me two others to wear for the several days of receptions. I had never worn a sari before and so my friend's Aunt dressed me for each occasion. The first time, she safety pinned the sari in a number of strategic places. Over the three days we eventually ran out of safety pins so for the final night of fesitivities she said, with that little sideways Indian tilting of the head, 'o-keh my deah, you vill jost haf to keep it up!'

There are other formal Indian outfits you can wear that are more comfortable for a westerner -- things with a long skirt and a little blouse similar to what you'd wear as the top under the sari (choli, i think it's called???)

Anyway, if she can pin you in, you'll be fine in a sari. Otherwise, fear not, there are many beautiful formal Indian garments you'll be able to choose from.

P.S. -- BTW, my friend who is well accumstomed to sari-wearing, had hers begin to unravel as she stood in her sister's receiving line. So, even the pros have trouble!!

I agree you should to 107 in Hicksville. I get my eyebrows threaded there. If they don't have anything there you like they will be able to tell you where to go. Try Femina. It is a salon on 107 that has some clothes. They are really nice there!! I have been going there forever and I love them. If you are traveling north on 107 you will pass Femina on the left (just past the HESS station) Make the U-Turn to get to the store

P.S. They do Hindu wedding decorations on your hands and everything
