Any info on Riu Resorts in Dominican Republic

Has anyone ever been to any of the Riu Resorts in the Dominican Republic? How was it? Were the rooms nice? The pools and beaches? Was the food good? Would you recommend it to a friend? Any feedback you have would be great! I'm especially looking into the Riu Palace Punta Cana for my destination wedding. The Riu offers a pretty good package and the Dominican Republic seems to be a little less expensive than the other Caribbean islands. Thanks!!!

We are doing to RIU BACHATA this Friday for my Bachelorette Party! We got a great deal and I will post about it when I get back!

In addition, I have a very close friend of mine who is from DR and she sings the praises of RIU Merengue. When she goes back there for Easter that is where she stays.

I absolutely love the RIU resorts. if you are going to chose Domincan Republic Puerto Plata is more preferable. If you go there do the top hotel which is the Bachata. If you stay at the top one you can go to all of the restaurants in all three hotels....
It is really a nice place. You are basically placed in a small town like setting with the three resorts. You have stores there, a small town (about 20 stores) with live music in the center of the town at night.
The rooms are really nice also. i prefer RIU resorts to the rest. Although I have never done SECRETS and hear that they do a great job also.

We went to Riu Puerta Plata. I think it was Bachata, for New years Last year 05 - 06- We had a blast. Its part of 3 hotels and we never left ours.

FOOD:
the food was ok, you can always find something that you like.

ROOMS:We also got a really great deal considering that we book 3 weeks before we left.
The rooms were OK - Clean and neat - but not 5 star. we were in a regular run of the mill room.
you can request a water view room before you go - or one closter to what ever activity that you likt to do and they will accomodate it. ( pool, beach, food hall)

BEDS: (OK i understand that this is not a big deal to a lot of people and if i were reading it I would be like well your just in your room to sleep anyway but I think in this case its worth mentioning cause it still sticks out in my mind)
UNLESS they ahve redone things-and if your going for your honeymoon, I dont know what the upgraded rooms were like.- but i would say if the bed is different in the upgraded rooms, then it would be worth thinking about upgrading.

the Bed to me was very flat and not comfy, and the pillows were very flat as well. ( i usually sleep with 2 and there i slept with 5 - considering i travel in the US for work all the time and the beds in hotels here are totally amazing. this is not a big deal to a lot of people but I like to take it easy when I am away and sleep late. The beds really bothered me.

OTHER LINK TO CHECK OUT:
I really like the site:

tripadvisor.com -

They have a ton of posts on there if you go into there fourms and a ton of relaly good information.

TAXI TO RESORT:
I have posted ( if its still up there) the name of a taxi guy who will come to the air port with a home made sign and bring you to your htoel and I will get that information of you need it just fm me.

OTHER RESORT:
I have heard better things about
iberostar - my fiance went with his family and they had a great time and he said that the food was better but it cost more to go there. - I think it would be worth your while looking into.

with all that said- definitley ask me any questions you may have - the country is really pretty - and

THE PEOPLE:
The people in DR were amazing they totally made the whole trip!! I would actually say that we became friends with them.. They could not do enought for us - the cleaning lady, front desk staff, bartenders, etc.
- we went horse back riding - def worth it
and I would go back in a heart beat.

Happy Traveling

Thanks for the info!! I'll look into it some more. We are planning a destination wedding now and I'm trying to find a nice place. It's hard to just pick a place based on the website. Glad to hear that they are pretty good I think I'm going to enlist the help of a destination wedding specialist. I need help planning the most important day of my life.

never been to the RIU but have been to DR. one tip - make sure you go to either Puerto Plata or Punta Cana - they are the nice resort areas. we stayed at an all-inclusive hilton near santo domingo and it was ..not where youd want to have a wedding thats for sure!! but from what i hear the resort areas are nice. good luck!!

I stayed at Melia Caribe (Punta Cana) in their VIP or Royal Service section of the resort. There were a few honeymooners there and there was also a wedding being held there for a couple from NY. It was very nice!

I just went to the Majestic Colonial in Punta Cana last May and loved the DR! It is so gorgeous! You will love it. I didnt stay at the RIU so I cant vouch for it but you should look into the Majestic as well. You will be impressed. For more information on all resorts I would check out tripadvisor.com. They have great information from actual travelers. Hope this helps! Good luck!
