So, I started jogging, and my hips hurt, my muscles in my butt and calves are killing me. Can anyone recommend a sneaker, and maybe some tips?

Re: any joggers? I need advice!
I have found asics to be the best for running. I have had Nike, addias and the asics seem to be the best!

I would go to a specialty running store (like 2nd Wind or Super Runners Shop) and let them tell you which sneaker works best for you. Also, make sure you don't take on too much distance at once. You shouldn't be increasing any more than 10% a week.
If you want to get in more exercise, I would supplement with non-impact cardio (i.e. elliptical, bike, swimming) and weights. Strength training goes a LONG way in staying trim.
FM me if you want more info. I've been running for quite some time!

I have the older version of this shoe and I love it.
Good luck because everyone's foot is shaped differently so you have to feel it out.

I've found Asics and New Balance shoes are great for running. Make sure before and after you go jogging that you stretch really well. Also, make sure you stay very hydrated. It's going to be a little painful right now, but once you get into it you will feel great!

Hpercyz made some great points but how much are you running and how much have you increased your mileage in what time frame. The general rule is not to increase your distance more than 10% each week, otherwise it is a recipe for disaster for most. If you are a 'newbie' and you really want to increase the distance, use a run/walk method to do it safely.

I like good ol Nike Shox. But everyone is different.
When running, make sure you have good posture and are keeping your body aligned and held upright. Don't sag or lean into your hips, this could be causing stress in your joints.
Your calves and butt could be just sore and a little crampy, which is normal to happen when you first start out. Increase your distance gradually and make sure to drink lots of water. Warm up with a walk/slow jog for 3-5 minutes and take a stretch before you go and COOL DOWN!! This is so important and so many people just stop and blood pools in their legs. When you are done keep walking for 3-5 minutes.

I don't think I stretch enough, and then by the end of my jog i can't walk anymore!

before you go and buy an expensive pair of kicks, go to a reputable running store (not really like sports auth. but like a real running store) and have them analyze your gait to see if your over supranate, pronate, or overpronate.. that as to do with how your feet land, your arch moves etc. if you don't do that, you run the risk of injuring your major joints. once you know how your feet land, etc, you can buy a sneaker that's meant to help with your gait and you'll feel awesome when you run. hth!
saucony and asics are the best for running, sorry girls but avoid nike like the plague. they are all show, not substance.

Re: any joggers? I need advice!
Run/walk is as simple as it sounds, it simply used for upping mileage. For example, if you want to increase your 3 mile run into 3.5 miles - the last 0.5 miles you break it up into running and walking stretches- if you are on a track you can use the markers on it to run one stretch and then walk the next, if you are on the sidewalk or on the street use the telephone poles, cars, mail boxes or anything that works for you. You just say to yourself, I'm going to keep running until I hit the blue car and then I will walk until I get to the end of the street, I'm going to pick it up again after I pass the old lady with the dog & etc. The point is to just cover the distance so your body can get use to the added stress without greatly increasing the risk of injury to your legs. Still if you run 20 miles a week, you don't want to add more than 10% to that 20 miles.
As your level of fitness increases, you will feel less of a need to stop for those stretches of walking. You don't worry about pacing, it's just the distance. Pacing comes later when the fitness is solid.

I've been running inconsistently since I was 12. But you can start by looking at the Beginners forum on Runnersworld.com and when you are ready join a local running group. Other people's experiences are good ways to learn how to avoid making mistakes. FM whenever you have a question.

i prefer nike's for running. it also will depend on the surface you run on and for me i need orthodics b/c i have a high arch so my legs don't absorb the shock of running. but good for you for running i haven't been on a run in............ hmmmmmmmmm.............. let me think..... its been..... FOREVER!
