Re: Any librarians out there?

Well I live in NYC so I'm looking at Pratt and Queens College. I used to work in publishing and now in the visual arts, but I really want a career that is not in corporate america and that lets me be around books and learning...

Where is CW Post's campus? What is making you think about it?

Post is in Old Brookville..

I have my BS in Accounting and I did that for three years (inventory and fixed asset accounting) at a large company.

I love reading and it has contributed to my deductive reasoning skills, vocabulary and independence and I want to pass on it's benefits to children. (LOL, sounds like a college essay statement). I think people don't realize how necessary it is to READ.

Anyhow, I'd love to be an elementary school librarian.

The teacher's hours are just a bonus!

My mom is a University Librarian and does very well for herself. She works at Duquese University currently. If you have any questions, feel free to contact her. Her academic credentials include: B.A., University of Northern Colorado; M.L.S., Rutgers University; M.A., Drew University; and Ed.D., University of Nevada, Las Vegas.

I'm not sure if I want to work in a school setting or a public library. I think my ideal would actually be a university. I agree with everything you said, above, though. It is so important to open children's minds through reading. I find it to be exciting and enlightening and never boring! I also think it would be a good career for a woman who is looking to eventually have a family! When are you thinking about going back to school?

By the way I went to RIT for my undergrad in photography, but was accepted to Pratt. The library there is awesome!

Law libraries are a good career path as well.

Hopefully Fall of 2009... After the wedding and we're settled and have a house.... you?

Law librarians do very well! My mom is friends with a few also. A Law University librarian tends to get a very large budget and they dont so bad themselves!

Re: Any librarians out there?

I actually just finished my first semester of library school at CW Post. I really enjoyed it. I am on track to become a school librarian, though I would not be opposed to working in public libraries too. But there is so many things you can do with a library degree!

The good thing about Post is that if you want to become a school librarian, the education classes that you need are included in the library school. some other library schools make you take additional credits in the education department before giving you your certification

Hmm - I'm thinking either Winter of '08 or Fall of '09. I've been trying to figure out what to 'do' with my life, long term, for such a long time, and I think this might really be it, which makes me want to start as soon as possible!
