I'm not sure if I want to work in a school setting or a public library. I think my ideal would actually be a university. I agree with everything you said, above, though. It is so important to open children's minds through reading. I find it to be exciting and enlightening and never boring! I also think it would be a good career for a woman who is looking to eventually have a family! When are you thinking about going back to school?
Law libraries are a good career path as well.
Hopefully Fall of 2009... After the wedding and we're settled and have a house.... you?
Law librarians do very well! My mom is friends with a few also. A Law University librarian tends to get a very large budget and they dont so bad themselves!
I already emailed your mom! I hope she doesn't mind :) I told her how I 'know' you! Thank you so much for your input. This is making me very excited...
Oh, no problem! She is very knowledgeable. I hope she can help you!
P.S. - your dress is gorgeous!
Oh thank you so much! Might I add yours is too! Where did you get your veil?

I actually just finished my first semester of library school at CW Post. I really enjoyed it. I am on track to become a school librarian, though I would not be opposed to working in public libraries too. But there is so many things you can do with a library degree!
The good thing about Post is that if you want to become a school librarian, the education classes that you need are included in the library school. some other library schools make you take additional credits in the education department before giving you your certification
Yayy!!! I'm so glad you are on here :) Congrats on finishing your 1st semester. How did you decide to get your MLS?
I graduated in May with my degree in history. I had taken some education classes in college, but realized that while I wanted to be in the schools, I didn't want to teach history - or really teach 100%. Thats how I decided to look into school librarianship - i LOVE libraries and reading and want to help kids feel the same way. So on a whim I applied to Post and when I got accepted I just decide to go and it was a great decision.
If anyone wants any more information, just let me know!

Thanks The veil in the pics is from Kleinfeld's - but I didn't buy it - sooooo overpriced. I'm having one made by a woman in Colorado - I actually got her info from another bride on here - and it's costing about 1/4 of the Kleinfeld price...if you want her info I'll FM it to you!

Are you going full time or part time? How long will the program take you? Did you look at any other schools?

Re: Any librarians out there?
My sister is the School Librarian in Central Islip Early Childhood Center. She taught first grade before that.
She got her Library Science Masters from Queens College.
Because she works for the school district she has the same contract as the teachers and can be tenured as well. All the benefits of being a teacher plus no grading papers!

Re: Any librarians out there?
I did look into Queens College - it is about 1/3 the cost of going to Post - but Post is literally 5 minutes from where I live now and also really close to work so it works out.
I think the program generally takes 2 years. This past semester I took 12 credits which was insane. Next semester I'm only taking 6, which should be plenty considering I have my wedding in May! They offer winter term and summer term classes.

You are getting married the weekend before me - how exciting. Are you working while you go to school? Or just school?

Well I live in NYC so I'm looking at Pratt and Queens College. I used to work in publishing and now in the visual arts, but I really want a career that is not in corporate america and that lets me be around books and learning...
Where is CW Post's campus? What is making you think about it?
i went to pratt for my undergrad in sculpture and i LOVED it - wouldn't trade it for the world. just so you know though, it's EXPENSIVE to go there, especially for grad school. i was looking into returning for my masters in art therapy and it was $1010 per credit! also, you'll be on the manhattan campus for the SILS program (not sure if that matters, but just letting you know )
anyways, good luck!
