Make it as relatable as possible--how does PI come into their daily lives/real world?

I had an idea of how to show that, but then I realized it was for the golden ratio .

Can you feed them? If so, circle shaped candy, pizza and pies would work best for this. If not (which you probably can't) then jar tops, bottles or any kind of circles would work.

Give the students measuring tape or pieces of paper to measure with (I use graph paper strips). Have them measure the diameter and circumference of a bunch of different sized circles in groups of 2-3. Then, have them figure out how many diameters would make a circumference. Many of them don't know that this is what pi is! I like to have them come to the board and put what they found in a chart...then, as a class (when everyone is enjoying the food if you can have it), average everything together and you'll get pi.

It's a lot of fun because it's hands on and the kids produce work product. You could make up a cute little worksheet too. I bring in a lot of circular things for them to measure so each group has 3-4 things to measure that are all different sizes. You could also have them bring in circlular things from home for hw from the night before for extra credit or something. HTH!

I always used to do this.I teach ELA now. We would make a big thing out of it and the kids loved it (7th grade).

You could have them measure circular things. First measure the diameter with a ruler. Then use a string to measure the circumference. Then divide it and they will realize (hopefully) that circuference divided by diameter is always pi! They make a chart and it's cool once they start to actually see it. You could cut different sized circles or use actualy circular objects.

Pi mobile

Pi posters with information about pi (research if you have access to computers in the class).

Bring in pies or pizza pi to celebrate (if you're allowed). We did the pizza pi party after all the projects. It was like a week thing.

I have a big list at home of different projects. I can email you

i actually remember doing something like this in 7th grade ... except my stupid teacher didn't tell us what we were supposed to do ... she just gave us printouts of circles, and a ruler, and string. it was a pain and i hated every second of it (though only because we all sat there not knowing what we're doing). i think it's a great idea if the kids have direction though

Measuring cans radius and cricumference and derving pi.

Make key chains of pi for ex yellow bead is 3 a star bead is the decimal point and 1 is a white bead etc

We are having the math teacher all have a digit on our sleeve and the kids have to put the teacher in the write order of pi

Make a paper chain similar to the keychain

Get the book Sir Cumference and the story of Pi

hmmmm thats all I have right now
