Any moms out there lawyers or..

in a similar, demanding profession? I plan on announcing my pregnancy later this week and I wanted to know how you went about it. I keep reading that you should have a plan ready when announcing it to HR/manager, etc., but I have no idea what kind of plan I should have!!!!

Feel free to FM me, if you like.

I am not an attorney but before I told my boss I had figured out my estimated due date and how many weeks I would be on maternity afterwards. The dates helped him to understand which projects would be effected.

I basically told a few of the partners who were working that day that i was expecting. I waited 12 weeks before I said anything. They seemed genuinely happy and of course asked me my plans, like how long I wanted to take off and if I still planned on working full time. I don't think they were very surprised since I recently married, bought a home, and I'm well into my 30's now.

It's a little easier for me, because I'm in-house counsel, so the atmosphere is more relaxed that way. Nonetheless, the work is demanding, and I am incredibly busy at work all the time. But, they were great when I told them, and thank goodness, were incredibly supportive throughout my pregnancy, during my maternity leave, and since I've returned. It will all work out, don't worry.

I have a question for the moms/moms-to-be that are lawyers -

How do you handle or plan to handle work and a baby. I dont plan on having kids for a while (at least 5-6 years) - but i havent decided whether i am going to stay at home and raise my baby or go back to work. This is so conflicting for me - on one hand i want to be able to stay home and be there for all my babies' firsts but on the other hand - i love my future profession and dont just want to give it up cold -

Georgia- I plan on being home 3-4 months and if I have money for longer I will but I doubt that will be possible. Just too many loans
Id rather stay home then care about the profession but I owe too much

then my mom will help me watch the baby

I dont know how my firm is with maternity leave - i also want to try to get into an inhouse cousel for a pharmaceutical company - guess i might feel differnetly after working for 5 years -

That is great that your mom will help you out - i know that my mom wont be helping me when i have a baby - she made it clear that she has raised her kids and wont raise mine - *lol* - she doesnt mind an afternoon but not daily basis -

I guess it will come down to money too- although i dont have loans (FH only has a few) we are going to have a mortgage to deal wiht - so that is pretty much the same...

I'm a doc, not a lawyer, but I plan to take my 3 months off, then go back full time. As Tammy said, the loans are so bad, someone has to pay them off. Besides, I love what I do, and it took me a long time to get there. I'd hate to leave my child, I know its gonna kill me, but I am the type who needs to work. My husband has his own business and I work 4 days a week, so we will need a nanny for 3 days a week, the rest of the week one of us will be home.
