Any pregnant vegetarians?

I'm not ttc, but i'm always with the mindframe that whatever happens, happens and b/c i'm so anal, i like to know all the answers . i was curious what the vegetarians were doing? supplements, extra nutrients, what did you doctor say, or have any of you gone back to eating meat while pg and if so, how was that?

Re: Any pregnant vegetarians?

I was a vegetarian for 15 years before becoming pg.....During my first three months I started craving steak and bacon pretty badly - this had never happened before. In about my 4th month I was at my in-laws and dh made bacon and I ate some - it was delicious! Since then i have steak at least once or twice a week - based on cravings.....It's such a personal decision that i would never recommend going back to meat-eating but it seems to have worked for me.....My doctor was a bit concerned at the beginng when I was a veggie since he saw a woman have a problem with not enough protein (he didn't go into detail) and said I needed to have protein at every meal - that is HARD. But I was able to do it with peanut butter and beans - good luck! FM me with any questions!

Hi, I was just peeking around..... definitely not preggo or even TTC yet!! Matt'sbride... may I ask you why you became a vegetarian (health, animal rights, etc?) because I am so curious about this myself.... I am a vegetarian too, and can't imagine myself ever craving meat, but have heard this from so many people! I'm not trying to challenge you in anyway (I'm sorry if it comes across as if I am!!) but I read the post and was just really curious how it could become a craving--I thought maybe if one wasn't morally opposed to meat, it would be easier to stomach it than if they were while being pregnant. Any thoughts? Thanks!

see that is my thing. i became a vegetarian at a young age for moral reasons and the thought of going back to meat grosses me out...chewing it, i mean. i have started to eat more eggs and loooooved peanut butter until someone on NWR said something about peanut butter and mice, and since then, can't eat it as much. but anyway, i have heard that pg women crave meat and just do it, but how? i mean, i know when the time comes, i will do whatever it takes to keep my baby healthy, but right now, it just is in my head that it will be difficult.

I'm not TTC yet either but I'm vegetarian too. I'm interested to hear anyone's experiences as well. There are some books out there on vegetarian pregnancy and raising your children vegetarian. Has anyone raised their child vegetarian? How has it worked out? I figured I could also find a good nutrionist when the time came.

I know that my Aunt and Uncle are Vegan and when she became pregnant she was told she really should eat some type of meat. So I believe she began with some fish and poultry. She never ate red meat though.

Re: Any pregnant vegetarians?

I became a vegetarian freshman year in college - I read 'A Diet for a New America' by Tim Robbins that discussed how animals were raised and killed. So it was for moral reasons that I initially became one - and then the thought of eating meat became gross to me. But I always wore leather, etc. so I was never on my high moral horse. I know I will never eat chicken again because it looks like raw flesh to me (sorry TMI). But for some reason I always thought if I went back to meat it would be steak/bacon. And when I became pg I had the cravings and just sort of went with it....I found it so difficult to get the protein I needed. Before becoming pg I wouldn't have given eating meat a second thought - I woudln't worry too much about it. When the time comes, just do what you feel and know if you become pg as a vegetarian, you wil be fine but will just need to focus on getting protein at every meal....

When my best friend became pregnant she ate hamburgers... she would joke and say the baby wanted them and she wasn't really eating it for her.

Once the baby was born she went right back to being Vegetarian. I guess your body knows what it needs to make the baby- and it makes you crave what's necessary.

I too was a vegan who began craving meat when I was pregnant. I also became anemic because the protein demand is so high. I compromised by eating free range, antibiotic free chicken like Bell & Evans. Other good protein sources for me were Yves veggie dogs, praeger veggie burgers, chik nuggets, etc. They have a lot of good high protein veg. options at Trader Joe's. I just had my baby a few weeks ago, and I went back to being a veg. again. Good luck!
