I am contemplating going back for my Masters in Special Education. Im just a little torn on what kind of masters to apply for. For the people that have masters in special ed- are you certified to teach childhood or secondary special ed? What are there more jobs in? I really appreciate any insight. Thanks.

Re: Any special ed teachers?
I am part of the old certification process, therefore I'm birth to 21. Most of my experience has been in HS, 9th grade, Inclusion and Self Contained Earth Science. I'm in my third year 'down' at the elementary level in an integrated classroom and I've never been happier. NO REGENTS!!!! LOL
Jobs are impossible to get right now. We're losing 4 teachers across the district for sure and there is talk of losing 3 special ed teachers too. Not sure if that helped or not.

Re: Any special ed teachers?
I'm currently certified in Special Ed. 7-12. I also have certification in Social Studies for 5-12. Honestly, I don't know if there are more job opportunities for elementary or secondary. I would just go with the age group you would feel more comfortable with. I could NEVER stay with one class all day...which is why I like high school- I like the constant changes. I think your best bet is to just go with your personal age preference.

Re: Any special ed teachers?
my best friend is a certified special ed teacher for early childhood education. all my teacher friends had a hard time finding jobs with the state of the economy... since I know u fm'd me about social work. I think there are way more social work jobs right now due to the bad economy. the hard times mean more people need services and therapy... thats just my stand point. I almost went for special ed, but deciced I'd rather work with people with disabilities in a social work fashion which is what I do now

I am certified in Special Ed and General Ed 7-12 English. I am currently teaching at a high school in the Bronx. I have my Masters in Urban and Multicultural Education...I would go for it...after all is said and done and our economy is back to normal...I Guarantee you...the City needs more special Ed teachers...especially Math and Science!

I am under the old program too. There are so few jobs out there now so it is hard to say. You may have more luck at a private school but then I would pick what age group you would like to work with.
