I was wondering if there were any special teachers here? I am considering going back to school for my Masters in special ed this september. I know this is a good field to go into but I'm a bit nervous because of the economy right now. Does anyone know if this is still good field to go into? I know there are no guarantees but is there a good chance I will have a job when I come out? Thanks in advance!

you will definitely be more likely to get a job if you enter into high school special ed. the job market for teachers is tough right now just like everything else but, people will retire and there will always be a need for teachers. it might take a little time and a lot of effort to get your foot in the door but once you do it will be completely worth it. go into it if its your dream, because if youre not super motivated it can be verrrrrrrry frustrating. good luck!

I was a NYC Teaching Fellow (for career changers/non-education majors--the city will pay for your masters!), and they were DESPERATE for special ed teachers. There will always be plenty of Special Ed positions, especially in high school and middle school.
Hope that helps!

Do you mind if I ask where you got your masters and what program you went into?

If you're a teacher, its def. the best field to be in right now. I've only seen special ed. teachers advertised lately not really any general ed.

im a special ed teacher, have been for 3 yrs. i have my bachelors in special ed and elementary ed and my masters in special ed. i have had an extremely hard time finding a position on long island. the city not so much, thats why im there. its become a very very competitive field, right up there with regular ed. but its good to have.

I would highly suggest it. FH has a degree in special ed/ English. He would ideally like to be an English teacher, but there are hardly any jobs. He has been a special education teacher for the last 5 years. Every year he looks for English positions, but is lucky to find a handful. Special education is definatly the field to go into for eduction. or.... you could be a math teacher like me
