I JUST found out I'm pregnant... and of course, my thoughts are wandering here, there and everywhere... should I be concerned that I'm a vegetarian? I don't eat meat, but I do eat a LOT of fish... any other vegetarians out there and what do you do to make sure you are 100% healthy for the baby? And, can anyone tell me which fish I need to avoid? Can I still eat Salmon?

Re: Any vegetarian mommys-to-be?
I am not a vegetarian but research does show that many types of fish are very beneficial during pregnancy. Salmon is one of them. I think it is rich in omega 3 and low in mercury. Fish like swordfish and tuna (esp tuna steaks) are high in mercury an should be avoided. One can of tuna fish a week is fine. I believe in all about moderation. Of course all fish should be cooked well!
here is an aricle I just found and mentioned vegetarians in it...
I am a vegetarian... I not vegan though.. I eat fish, dairy products, and eggs. I have been avoiding fish lately because it makes me nausious.. I've been eating a lot of eggs, beans, nuts, cottage cheese, and other cheeses for protein.

Oyyy... I forgot to mention that I'm lactose intolerant so I can't handle the cheeses... I guess I'll fill up on fishies, eggs, beans and nuts. I think I'm going to make an appointment with a nutritionist soon...

Re: Any vegetarian mommys-to-be?
I WAS a veggie for 15 years until I got pregnant! Everyone I know was stunned that I ate bacon once and steak 2 times in the past 3 weeks. I can't explain it, I just had a craving and did it. I wasn't expecting it at all! I don't think I'll ever eat chicken or white meat again but the cravings I had for red meat when I got pg where too strong to ignore.
well that doesn't help you AT ALL! but before I ate the bacon at around 15 weeks I was eating a lot nuts and beans and peanut butter. I also ate eggs and fish when I could stomach it. Not to scare you but my doctor said he saw one girl that was a vegetarian that had a problem b/c she didn't get enough protein so he told me he wanted to see me eat protein at every meal. just try to focus on getting the protein and you'll be fine!

I heard that happens to a lot of woman! (even happened to Phoebe on Friends... )... I'm REALLY hoping it doesn't come down to that, so in the meantime, I'll try to incorporate some type of protein into every meal... YUM! I LOVE pumpkin seeds!!!

OMG I was just gonna say that during my pregnancy I was able to eat all the dairy I wanted - I LOVE cheese - I hope this happens to you - Also - about the red meat thing - during my pregnancy I also craved and I mean really craved hamburgers, I never like them before but I could not get enough of them!!!! Surprisingly I thought my son would come out loving them - but he still won't eat them and he's 6 now!

Cheese I can handle (REALLY handle - it's the second forbidden love of my life next to chocolate), but red meat?! NO WAY!! I guess time will tell...
