Anybody else planning an LI wedding from OOT?

Anybody else planning an LI wedding from OOT?

I grew up on LI but I have lived in Raleigh, NC for six years and we chose to have our wedding on LI b/c of my huge Italian family that lives there.

I went to a wedding show here in Raleigh on Saturday and one woman suggested I get a wedding planner/day of coordinator that is already on LI (which I think is a great idea but sounds costly)...anybody do this same thing? any recommendations from all you Long Islanders that have used a wedding planner?

I've been planning my LI wedding from Pittsburgh while going to school... but I haven't used a planner or anything. I basically just make sure that whenever I know I'm going to be home for breaks I make a list of all the things I know I have to get done, and get it done! I actually think it makes me more productive, because if I was just sitting around at home I probably wouldn't have most of the stuff done that I have done already! Also, if I need anything done while i'm in Pittsburgh and can't make it to LI my mom is there to help me as well! I can see though that if you can't make it to LI very much or if you don't have someone there to help you that it might be easier for you if you do have a planner! Good luck with everything!

Im not planning from out of town. I think that so much is being done from emails with my vendors, that it doesn't matter where you are. Therefore I dont think its a must to have a wedding planner unles you have the extra money to spare. However, if you are really worried about the day of going smooth- def research the different people out there. Also find out how much your hall will take care of for you. Some of them take care of almost everyhing!

There are lots of us that planned from off the Island. It can be done, and you will hear from brides who live on the Island who swear by their DOC.

I did not use a coordinator. We didn't have the money for one, and I wanted to do the hunting for vendors, etc. Perhaps you should try to do some planning on your own for a bit and if you find it really hard to do, then seek out a coordinator.

Don't forget too-- these boards are like having dozens of coordinators at your fingertips! Other brides and newly married wives are some of your best resources!

I planned most of my wedding from SC, I used Francesca from Dazzling Affairs, she is a vendor on here. She really was everything i needed, no giving up my power or control

We did (married 5/07). It was a bit hairy, but achieveable. A lot of folks on this board are OOT as well. We didn't use a coordinator. There are lots of recommendations on vendors and ideas on this board. Good luck!

I'm planning from the DC area. I think I am going to wait until this fall and see how I feel about my vendors, etc.

It is something I keep debating. I am in PR and do about 10 events a year and I think I will be going nuts the day of fixing things and double checking my vendor's work.

The coordinator at RH is very nice but she seems a little scatter brained and that makes me a little nervous. If someone could get there ahead of me and check out the details that would be very reassuring.

But as with everything else, budgets are definitely a factor.

I'm planning from PA, no DOC/planner. Both my parents and FH's parents live on long island (about 5 min away from each other) and my mom is really my wedding planner....she just retired so she is gung ho wedding! But, I'm also dealing with all vendors through email and people have been really understanding. It's definitely true that when I do get a weekend there I have to PACK it with stuff! And now that the wedding is just over 5 months away, I feel like I have a lot left to do! I don't know that a DOC/planner really would have helped me though since I already have some ppl local who can meet with someone if need be....

Im planning from across the country in Oregon and let me tell you it stinks! I am definitely planning on getting a DOC when the time comes but it is so hard to get things done for me. Plus I don't want to put the whole burden on my family that still lives on LI.

I am doing the same. Im currently living in Orlando Florida. Its tough but once you get the big things done I dont think its too bad. As long as you can fly home and maybe get someone from there to help you should be ok.

I'm planning from the DC area also, and my wedding is in less than 6 weeks! It has been tough at times, but I don't have a cooridinator, and so far so good. I met with some coordinators in the beginning, but then I decided that I really wanted to be the one in charge. I would've gotten a DOC if I had some extra money, just to make sure everything runs smoothly. It all depends on you and what you feel most comfortable with. I go to LI once every few months to do things.
